Grigsby went out in round three with a busted wheel bearing, and had to push it over for a place in the second moto. Vince Landry went well for his fourth , overall. . Greg Beloi t led the 500cc No vices home with three stra ight , he 'll be warmly welcomed by Montgomery , G rigsby and crew when he transfers. Jim Morris was giving him fits, and Jeff Maddy got 'ha rd after him in the last round . That 500cc class jus t keeps getting better and better with plenty of I , •• , .; . , I .. talented No vices to kee p filling the highe r classi fications .. . such as Mad dy who rid es a Husq va rna , a b reed not often seen fla t -trackin ' . T he sidehacke rs came ou t again , with th e tea m of Sh erman /Elliot with a Norton taking th e firs t two but DNF in the th ird , darn it. Br own/Myers won overall with two seconds and a first , a nd sure had a good race going in the second moto with Hi cks/DeCost a . th ei r sma ller H onda gi ving th e Hicks' big Yammie all it wanted and th en som e in the turns. And now to th e glamor class . . . th e Open Exp erts. National number 95 Scott Pearson came out, and we're told stood th e young 'uns on thei r ea rs th e night before by sho wing th em how tu rn one at Perris ca n be rid den , that is in a fu ll lock slide fro m the second you land after the j u mp. H e and Da nny Perkins tra ded firs t spots arou nd for th e first two m otos, it was wild fo lks . . . bu t Scott had the interesting experience of ha ving his fro nt brake lock up th e wheel coming over th e jump and he DNF. Pea rson sa id he needed cle an sho rts afte r that one. bu t showed his a b ilit y by not fa lling off . It was a day of frustratio n for most of th e riders : Mike Myers' N orton ran grea t for him , he got a first ro u nd three , but had DNFs with a rock slamming the petcock shut on e trip. and a blown Champion pl ug the other. Bill Bartels was another one wit h troubles. but Steve Miller took second overall and Steve Fortune on his Harley. th ird.
