NOV . 26 Lee Scheffers (Yam ) and Bob Balentine (KTM ) teamed up for a wire to wire victory over the team of Max Eddy/Mark Zoller (Yam) with solo Ironm a n Jeff Matthews running a consistent third overall. As the banner dropped Morgan Malocco (Yam ) reacted with a ho leshot to th e bomb. Just after the trail turned left. Malocco and Wavne Allen (Yam) made contact and went down . Balentine received the lead and stretched it rapidly with "Crazy" Chris Kallen ( Pad illa Off Road) holding down second . Mark Barnes (Yam) . Tim Nething (Hus). Ricky Beck (Baker R&D) and Eddy were in a herd as they thrashed ,their wa y up a deep whooped canyon in search of the lead. Matthews was on the move as he picked his way through dust as did Ironman Bill Saltzman (Hus) . Nething and Fuller were going for it on the old buggy section of the course while the 60 Minutes helicopter buzzed overhead. Balentine had strereched out a good lead when Eddy motored into second ahead of Kallen and Barnes. Chuck Cartledge (Ya m) . well known 100cc ac e. was streaking his 400 up th e winding sa nd wash with the leaders in sight a nd Mal occo on his ta il. Com ing into the pits. Bal ent in e had com p iled a three-minute lead over Eddy with Matthews running · an impressive th ird . Barnes got by Kall en. and Mal occo , Neth ing. Beck . and Full er came through in that ord er ahead of Saltzman. The second loop showed no overa ll ch ange in the top three but Eddy a nd Zoller did make some time on Balentine and Scheffers. Malo cco and Rick Muller moved in fourth and Cartledge and Dennis McLaughin ea sed into fourt h . Kallen was running fifth on loop one but pa rtner Jerry Lowell (Yam) seized in the big sandwash whil e advancing rapidly. The team of Barnes and Barney were holding down sixth ahead of Fuller's parmer Scot Duncan. Nething's parmer. " Black Bart" Mitchell (Yam) was sandwiched betw een two lightweight teams. Upp/ Foster and Atchison /Morrison . Lap three saw Trudy Beck (Yam) and Bill Conger (Ya m ) make a dramatic move to fourth ah ead of Malocco /M uller. Mirchelt/Nerhing were sixth . Ba rn es/ Ba rn ey seventh. Duncan/Fuller eighth. and Mike Martin (H us) and Richard Hall (Yam) were now running in ninth . The top three never changed after the completion of lap one but Zoller and Eddy were within 22 seconds of Scheffers and Ba lent ine at the end of loop four . Duncan/Fuller were now fifth behind Miller/Morrison for the lightweight battle. Beck /Conger dropped back slightly. The Amateur team of Paul and Bill Vanderbyl (H us/ KT M) wer e running out of the top 10 but still held a commanding lea d over Eddie Pierce and Kevin Olen (Suz) . Novices Joe Logan and Jim Tarpley (Yam) were far out front . Jeff Cannon (Hus) and Steve Brook shi re (Ya m) had rec overed from ea rly race problems a nd was now running third Amateur behind Pierce/Olen . Junior/Senior Amateurs Leon Pri ce (Yam) and Lenny Hancock (Yam ) were out front and all alone as they sat out on their last lap. At the finish it was Scheffers/Balentine with the victory and Zoller and Eddy rid ing for Yamaha of Barstow in for second. The unsponsored Ironrnan, Matthews. was third. Malocco/Muller were fourth with Duncan /Fuller in for the 250cc win. Foster/Upp took 200cc honors with Barn es/Barn ey. Atchison/ Morrison . Hall/Martin and Ironman Saltzman ro unding out the top 10 . The Cycle Products West team of the Vanderbyl brothers took first Amateur with the entire rear section of Pa u l's bik e self- destructing within sight of the finish . . Pierce/Olen took a well deserved second on a JD Suzuki. New Junior/Senior number one Monte Lee and his parmer Vern Heth were uncontested for the Expert win and Hancock/Pierce were first in the Amateur romp. Mike Easl y and Scot Hodges (Baker R&D ) scrambled to firs t lightweight Amateur with a big lead on the finish . Richard Hughes (Yam) and Ed Waldheim (Yam) were once again victorious in the Senior div ision. this t ime sha ri ng the win as a team . Logan /Tarpley easily won the No vice class with Bill J. Lee (Hus) and Br ian Zier (H us) in for second. Junior/Senior Novices Glen Cox (Yam ) and Troy Moore (Yam) were in front at the finish with a sparing lead . Bob Lubatte (Yam) and Don Glen (Yam ) made six laps to take the overall Begi n ner win ahead of Todd and Tom Craig (Suz). Leslie Klug (Hus) and Kell y Kline (Yam ) piloted their Baker R&D bikes to the Women's Division win over the Fanner sisters. Trish and Lori. In the Mini class it was Gary Curtis (80 Suz ) soloing for the win and deserving the title !ronman. The course. despite its fast la p times . was demanding and choppy.
