The FIM decided at their congress in Poznan , Pola nd to drop the. class fro m the Wo rld Cham pion , ships in 1980. Also to be drop ped from \\Torld Ch ampionship stat us is the 750cc Series: Like the 350cc class. th e 750cc series will ru n in 1979. but not th e following year . I Endurance road ra ci ng w ill be elevated to World Championship statUs in 1980. Rules under which it is to be run will be changed to those governing Formula TT - but w ithout the present d ifferences which give four-strokes a capacity advantage over two-strokes. ln stead there will be three classes open t o all types of engines, but t he u nits must be basically t hose from available street machines. The classes will be: 1.000, 600, and 4OOcc. As with the present formula, competitors w ill have virtually a free choice w ith fr ames and parts. The FIM a lso proposes that organizers be a llowed to permit prototype machines to be run in a s e pa rat e c lass. The m o ve opened up talk that the Superbike Production race at Daytona in 1980 could be for World Championship points. CN CN ~ Q.) ..0 8 Q.) :> o In a rule change that will have ISDT veterans singing. "T hings ain't what they used to be ," the FIM has decided to ease the rul es governing th e ISDT. I n a move which they say is an attem pt to sto p . some of the chea ting and to help the privateer . th e FIM will now limit th e parts which may not be changed during the event to the frame . crankcase. wheels and number plat es. All other parts ma y be ch anged with in the normal working peri ods. and speci al too ls ma y be provided by the back-up crew· th ey 'do not ha ve to be ca rried by th e rider as in the past. Z In a s urprise move, the FIM voted by 26 to 11 to lo w e r the age at which an int e rn ati o na l lic ense can be granted from 18 to 16 . This covers a ll types of motorcycle sport including road racing. Du ring t he discussion, the FIM medical committee strongly opposed the move, but they were over-ruled when t he motion was put to vo t e. Dr. Claudio Costa . chief med ical officer at Imola and son of race organizer Francesco Costa , strongly attacked the Isle of Man TT during a meetin g of the FIM medi cal committee in Poland. He said that riders who went to the TT were like circus artists who performed with out a safety net. But his views were not endo rsed by th e Congress and the re was no concerted effort to oust the T T from the list of in te rn a tio n a l even ts. Former s idecar World Champion Willi No ll of Germany was voted on to the FIM Road Race Committee in place of American Bob Ha nsen. In other bu siness. th e Congress adopt · ed ru les to ba n the controversia l Beo sidecar un it which was feat u red in our Gran d Pri x Sketchpad feat ure in issue 43 _ The list goes on and on and on. For a warm-up Yamaha's Bob Hannah ra pped off 22 consecutive moto wins in a row in championship competition. Then he devastated the 250cc MX National Championships, leaving the series in a shambles and making it a contest for second. Next he clinched the Supercross Series title, and now he's added the jewels from the Trans·AMA Series to his crown. What next?
