The atmosphere does look better for us now than in the past as the fair grounds needs the revenue from our events , a lot of money, since the passage of Proposition 13. And most of all we have tried to work with the neighbors and the fair. But we can use all the help we can get looking ahead to future years. so do send those letters to the Board of Supervisors, 70 West Hedding, San Jose , CA 95110 with copies to the Fair, 344 Tully Road , San Jose . Photo by Charles Morey. 4 Mad as hell We are mad as hell, and we are not going to take it anymore . As organized desert racers. we continue to lose ground. . We lost Barstow to Vegas four years ago because of pressure from environmental groups. The next year we lost the Check Chase run to the river. This year the SoCal race has bit the dust. We have lost areas that we have raced over for 25 years . . We have had our courses changed at the last minute by the whims of th e BLM, . . , We are tired of Bureacratic BS. We are tired of Environmental blackmail. We are tired of red, tape , denied permits and canceled races. We are tired of writing letters . . We are tired of sending telegrams. We are tired of being pushed. We are tired of bending. We are not going to bend anymore. Saturday, Nov . 25 the Thomas family is going to take a trail ride to Las Vegas . We will obey the laws and follow existing roads and trails. 1£ the BLM chases to arrest us , we will fight for our rights through the courts. We are being run off of our land. It is time to stand up and be counted. THE ALAN THOMAS FAMILY Sylmar. CA Good guy. Pashayan Good guys win once in awhile , after all . Or to put it another way: Today, John Krebs; Sen . Alan Cranston. the next time around, The Associated Press called Krebs' 17th Congressional District defeat by novice Chip Pashayan a shocker. Nobody thought Sierra Clubber Krebs was in trouble . But he was - having failed ' to listen to a district comprised not of preservationists but those who sought multiple use of public lands. His Cranston -backed sally .against Mineral King development did it and ' suggested , perhaps, that the voters finall y ar e saying, " basta . . . en ought" As for Pashayan , he was one of onl y two politicians 'who attended our Golden Trout Wilderness protest rally in the Sequoia National Forest in July , promising at the time if elected to introduce legislation repealing the Sierra Club landgrab. He's one of us and an officeholder who isn't afraid to drive a couple of hundred miles to find out what the people really think. My opinion, for what it's wonh , is that the new congressman ought to be contacted at P.O . Box 12011, Fresno. CA 93776. Let him know we are behind him. And let your own congressman know that this freshman .ought to be supported. OWEN KEARNS . JR. Bakersfield, CA No m ore Sespe I just finished reading the article "Ride the Sespe " by Donald Betsworth in the Nov . 15 issue of Cycle News. I believe I am one of the riders he refers to in the story . In late summer of 1977, I rode from Gorman to Sespe and spoke to a man and his son . He said he had written for Cycle News . My buddy and I again rode from Gorman to Sespe in early July. 1978 . Our usual two to two -and-one-half hour ride took almost four hours this time. While we got to the hot sp rings , there were no "golden girls " - there was nothingl The whole place had been washed away the the heavy rains of the past winter.. You couldn't even tell where the hot pool had been. _ There was no one at Sespe but us. The place used to be full of bikers and four-wheel-drive vehicles that come in from Lion's Camp. Hopefully, one day it will be rebuilt. I've always enjoyed the ride there. and it's been a great place to spend a couple hours resting and watching. DAN GLICK Simi Valley, CA San Jose salvation7 Regarding the letter to the ed itor, issue of Nov. 8. on the San Jose Mile sent you by Marcus F. Guthorsen : It 'was the finest letter I have ever read on this subject , and I thank the writer. We· do have problems with the neighbors . and it has been a battle with little if any support from those in rac ing. . We have done everything possible to please these ne ighbors but , as one of them said, "I just don't like racing." OK Kevin, here's what you do . Write or call Mr . Bill West , 6430-I6th Street North, Suite B, St. Petersburg, FL 33702 ; 8H /J22·UH. He's the head honcho at . SuperSports Promotions, Inc ., which sponsors the Florida Winter AMA series. He'll be glad to fill you in on all the details . . . Editor Lady racers get standing ovetion Having been lucky enough to take an active pan in the Women's National Motocross. held at Carlsl:ia Raceway October 28 ·29 , I want to express my respectful admiration for each competitor in that event. For two successi ve days of intense. grueling racing, these ' ladies maintained a spirit of competitiveness of which they should all be very proud. This enthusiasm. complimented by their consistent thoughtfulness and cooperation, was the catalyst that solidified the success of the weekend. My helmet is off to these women athletes from whom some of their male counterparts could take a much • needed lesson . TOMMY PEARL Encinitas. CA Shu ltz sez _ t. I would like to thank all of my sponsors this past year for helping me earn a factory ride with Maico USA: Hi -Point Racing Products. Works Performance Shocks, Wheelsmith Engineering. Rancho Cordova Suzuki. and Sisler Construction. A special thanks to my father-mechanic Orville, who traveled with me . and Toyota and Mr . PiBB for sponsoring the Supercross Series and National Championships. Contrary to an ad which appeared in Cycle News a couple of weeks ago. I have raced exclusively with Works Performance Shocks for over one year. The mistake came about when I tested another brand of shocks , and found out my Wo~ks Performance Shocks were superior; I will continue to use them.
