It's all over for 1978. Ascot put the cap on the
SPeedway season with the long track championship on the half mile oval. Just like last week's
qualifier, the race belonged to Bruce Penhall
and Shawn Moran . with the
addition of Bobby Schwartz.
Seventeen-year-old Moran got
off to a poor start in his first
26
race when the clutch came loose in
tum one. and he scored no' points. But
by the end of the night he earned 12
points by winning his next four events .
He also beat Penhall when they met.
The surprise of the night was
Schwartz, who was not on the program
as a regular rider, He was the first
reserve rider and got his chance when
Bob McLain went out with bike
trouble .
Schwartz racked up U points to end
up in second place for the night, just
one point behind the new long track
champion. Penhall.
After 20 events. there was a run-off
for third between Ron Preston and
Shawn Moran . Preston was well out in
front of the two-lap event when he got
into trouble int o turn three and went
down hard . He .walked away and
ended up with fourth overall .
Penhall has only been in two race
meets in the U.S. this season . last
week's qualifier. which he won and the
long track championship this week,
where he took the title with 14 points.
