life is short for an LCD type clock due to the way Digitronics chose to drive its internal clock. They estimate 25 hours which is probably two or three enduros. The battery is replaced by removing the four end screws and taking the case apart . The Digitronics would have to have some waterproofing to be used in waterlogged East ern end u ros. Price is $139.95 ·which is expensive but if you ha ve invested $2000 in a new super duper enduro bike . . .. . ? Clairemont Cycle Supply What att ra cted me to the Clairernont clock was the price , $49 .95 1How ever , further investiga tion revealed that the clock uses a clock chip which displays hours/minutes , but you have to push a button to display seconds like some of the older LCD watches. Clairemont readily admits the clock might not suit the needs of an experienced " A" rider but would fit the needs and pocketbook of a less experienced rider who is m ore interested in minutes than seconds. Bruce Sanford at Clairernont uses two of his clocks, one set to seconds . H e offers a special price fo r two of them. Cla irem ont designed and bu ilt a nice , very compact ho lder for the clocks. The battery is mounted on the clock board and should last a year. Int erna ls are "solid state" with no wires. Setting the clock is a little awkward as a toothpick is used to depress a switch th rough a very small hole in the case. . Countdown Engineering The Countdown Engineering clock was designed by one of District 37's top lightweight enduro riders , Jerry Counts. Jerry is an electrical engineer y p rofess ion and set out a couple of years ago to design what he thought would be an idea l clock. The most obvious featu re of the Countdown clock is the built -in roll chart holder. Since roll ch art holders are priced around $20 separately , it 's a consideration . The solid sta te board only ha s two short wires leading out of the sealed case leading to the batteries which are located under the rollers of the roll chart. T he board is also coated with a special sealer before assembly to further protect the components. Two penlite batteries power the clock for a yea r . The Countdown clock also uses a glass cover over the LCD display to prevent damage .to the sensitive LCD fa ce . A pair of seal ed switc hes are used to set the clock and no ' on/off is provided or ne eded sin ce it runs for a yea r without changi ng b atteries. The Countdown clock is the on ly .o ne of th e three to make an effort to :;sea l" the internals. It is probably the on ly one wh ich will work in th e mud and rain . ., At $89 .95 it has a price advantage ove r th e Digitronics clock a nd offers m inu te s / seconds ar-rhe -sarne -r ime d ispl ay over the cheaper Clairemont unit.
