Down the back straight on the next lap, little Bobby pulled out all stops and went for the pm again. He nearly had it when the old style Yamaha seized and he coasted into the pits with a nuts on his lips along with a crafty smile. Thompson coasted on to the biggest win ofthe day. Roger Slack seemed heir apparent once again with a good 360/500cc Expert heat race -holding off Rick Delacy and the Yamaha World/Gary Contemo Special. Slack appeared to have ignition troubles in the next race and it wouldn't fire until after the green appeared. Delacy flew to the front for an easy win although Kirk King stuck with him all the way on the Berkeley Yamaha TT 500 but couldn't close the gap. Billy Scott doubled up, taking both 250cc and 500cc Junior mains with lots of style. He should be a good choice for .the Expert ranks come next year . Larry Krusemann grabbed second in the 250cc class after having won his heat for the second straight time and Monty Latif was the only rider who could stay with Scott's S &. K Yamaha in the 500cc ranks taking second on the KR monoshock, Chris Carr took the 80cc Expert win with Walt Bevins tops in the Junior portion; Todd Willaman took the l00cc Novice and Tim Rahn the 80cc Novice in a combined show. Barry Pelky won the U5cc Novice over Sonora's Mike Bird and big brother Mark Willaman took the Expert portion of the 125cc J r I Ex combined ,with Larry Barkhouse over Pete Murray in the Junior set . Willaman and Pelky among others come from deep in Oregon to ride this track. In the big bike exhibition Dean Cleeton, a road racer, won' the Sportsman show over Concord Yamaha's Jerry Brandt while John Winciwicz brought out the overpowering XR·750 H-D to a no contest Semi- Pro show . For a final touch , the organizers decided -to have a king of the track race at the end of theday and came up with 14 odd varieties. Delacy eased into the first corner and held it for six laps but his soft compound Goodyear wam't up to the tough sruff. Winciwicz Doug Chandler. AMA Nation'al Short Track Champion in four classes , continues to domin~te the mini-bike classes in D-36·. He's a cinch for his third straight ~ar as the number one Black Plate with yet two more wins in the mini short track at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. Keith Day and Rod Spencer continued their battle royale in the 250cc Expert class and Keith was the easy winner in the 500cc Expert. Chad Felicio put together a good · main event ride to win the l25cc Novice class over Don Copeland while Tony Holdsclaw held on for the oiiiy l25cc Junior trophy. Jim Willis took his Can-Am to the 250cc Novice n . over Roger Hazen and Ricky Cremona for the only real upset of the nigot while Roger Burditt beat out Ron Silva, Ron Murphy and Danny Moore in a free for all 250cc Junior main. Three big heats of 250cc Exper.ts made for interesting campaigns to the main with Gary Johnson and Fred Bennett eventually leading the 'pa'ck into the first tum of the 12 lap main.. It was the Johnson venus Bennett for half a lap until Rod Spencer and Keith Day dialed past the whole pack in one fell swoop. Spencer, on the NO sparked Martin Cycle Ossa, had extr.a incentive in the grandstand with Steve Eklund rooting him on and he wetit for the win in grand style. ? Gerald Spencer, one of the guys that got Steve Eklund into racing, matched off with Jack Kline in the 500cc Junior for a win by inches. Keith Day and the day -glow green TT 500 took the 500cc Expert win with Bill Calicura joining in to conclude the affair. . Resuhs r PEE·WEE 1. Billy Totriclt (SUll; 2.
