BISHOP, CA , OCT. 29
It only took a few races for t h e
long sandy Bishop track to swell
with endless bone jarring whoops
which proved to be more than
challenging during a 50 minute moto.
Respective class winnen Kenny Zahrt,
Tim Locey and Johnny O'Mara really
earned their cash for the day.
Willy Harper took charge of the first
250cc Pro moto and pulled away for a
few laps before Tracy Oswald started
to close the gap. Harper's front wheel
went away just before Oswald caught
him and Bill Ovellet te took over
second while Mike Shoemaker, Tim
Locey and Ken lahrt moved up
around mid-pack. A few laps later
Oswald lost a gas tank bolt off his
Suzuki and Ovelette roosted on by the
frustrated leader while Locey and
Shoemaker were doing some roosting
of their own . Locey caught up to
Ovellette bu t didn't get by. Shoemaker
snagged thi rd and lahrt was fourth
followed by Monte McCoy .
Locey set his throttle in the pegged
position, taking the second moto lead
on the first lap. Ovellette had other
ideas and set out after Locey leaving
Curt Sturgen running third while
Shoemaker looked content with
fourth. Zahrt showed up about 20
seconds late for the start but he dialed
his Can-Am in and went for it.
Halfway through moto two and
already in fifth , Zahrt was hauling
wide open. He zapped Shoemaker,
reeled m Sturgen and got by. when
Sturgen bailed. Locey won , Ovellette
settled for second, lahrt rode a mad
man's race to tag third and the Shoe
was fourth .
125cc Pro speedster Johnny O 'Mara
pulled an almost routine holeshot and
gassed his way to a wide open lead
before getting off and damaging his
rear hub. Tim Locey inherited the
lead from O'Mara and went on to win
while Jim Holley roosted his way to a
second place finish . Jim Pappe
maintained for thi rd whil e Mike
T ripes, having trouble staying on his
bike , managed a fourth . O'Mara's
chain fell off but he still fin ished fifth .
O'Mara holeshot the second moto,
Pappe was second ahead of Chip
Johnson and Tripes. Locey ba iled at
the halfway mark after getting a rea r
flat , which meant Pappe had th e
overall if he stayed in second. T ripes
made his move past Johnson as Pappe
got radica l and lost It, falling back to
fifth . At the finish O 'Mara had led it
wire to wire , T ripes picked up second,
Johnson third , Gorge Fab er fourth and
Pappe was relegated to fifth .
A Yamaha mount ed Zahrt led th e
Open Pros out of tum one , followed by
J eff Loff, and they immedia tely pulled
away from the rest of th e pa ck. Will
Harper was running third until
meeting some knarly bumps that put
him on his head. Before the moto
ended Zahrt and Loff had swapped
the lead around a few times but Zahrt
came out on top .
Zahrt led the second moto wire-towire for a flawless overall. Harper got
off the line around mid- pack but
finished the race behind Zahrt and
took second overall.

Cantaloupi/Wosick
untouchable at
Sacto
By Chuck W oodbury
SACRAMENTO , CA , OCT. 22
More than 380 riders , including
41 250cc Pros, showed up for the
third round of the four race CMC
series at Prairie City OHV Park.
Once
again
Stockton's
Donnie
Cantaloupi and San Jose's Larry
Wosick mounted their Yamahas for
top honors of the day. Cantaloupi
grabbed victories in both the 125 and
250cc Pro classes, with Wosick taking
the overall in the Open Pro
competition.
Cantaloupi had no trouble winning
the first 125cc Pro moto. His only real
threat came from his Moto-X vf'ox
teammate Wosick. But the second
moto was a diffe rent story . Wosick led
through several laps ea rly in the race
bu t Cantaloupi drove hard and
recaptured the first position only to
lose it seconds later to a persistent
Wosick . Third pla ce Brian Coulson
(Suz) was well back, with Ph il Crane
(Suz), Mel Sample (Suz) and Cloyse
Ho lland (Suz) right on his tail. Wosick
and Cantaloupi con tinued to battle it
out with Cantaloupi finall y moving in
front . Wos ick continue d to hound
Cantaloupi, bu t by the white flag
Donnie had opened up a four-second
lead.
An awesome 41 Pros lined up at the
sta rting gate in 250 cc action .
Oakland's Chris Grower (H o n)
grabbed th e holeshot , but midway
t hroug h the first lap Cantaloupi
moved into the lead. By th e fourth lap
Cantaloupi had opened up a four
second lead over Jerome He iberger
(Hon) who had passed Grower earlier
to take second. Danny Chandler (Mai)
had been moving up swiftly after a
terrible start that left him dead last.
As the race neared its end Cantaloupi
opened up a 10 second margin and
Chandler was now in a solid second
slot ahead of Heiberger. The positions
held to the finish.
Cantaloupi grabbed the second
moto holeshot , in spite of some trouble
with the starting gate, and ~hen
proceeded to outclass everyone,
eventually finishing with a 22·second
margin over Rance Burgeso (Yam)
I
who followed Donnie throughou t the
moto.
Z
Bob Myers (Mai) of Antioch fought
hard with a number of challengers to
capture the Open Pro win in the fint
moto. Dave Wood (Yam) and Bill
Grossi (Ma i) gave Myers his toughest
competition, Wood early in the race
and Grossi in the second half.
0 c
Wosick holeshot the second moto;
with Mye rs and Grossi falling in
behind at the end of lap one . Midway
through the moto, Myen had some
trouble and dropped back to third
with Grossi moving into second. Myers
held on to this slot for just a soon
time, dropping back even further as
Brian Jodry passed him up. As the
moto neared its end, Wosick had a
wide ma rgin over second-place Grossi,
Jodry was well back in th ird and Myers
had dropped all the way to ninth
place. Overall honors went to Wosick~
Grossi andJodry .
