.
Newly crowned AMA National
d Open Champion,Rick Burgett,
·yreturned to Woodland without
' 1. bike. That's the only thing
"s ·:)
n that's reall y changed from last spring
when th e season ended at Woodland.
Burgett is sporting a crown and a
slightly broken body but the boys -tJ immy Anderson , Tom Michletsch,
"a nd Robby Clark merely carried on '
their winning ways. With picture
perfect weather, a new starting gate
.'Hand huge rider turnout, the folks at
Woodland broke the champagne
L bottle on what will most likely be their
best season ever.
'
m,T . •The 125cc Pros broke the ice on the
new rear falling start gate, designed
[a nd built by J im and Grandad
Blasdell . Anderson (Su z) from
Longview , Wash ington go t the
holeshot and held it all th e way. T ed
Bechford (Yam) had second spot, but
dropped ' out at lap four wi th
"I mechanicals for the first rno to and
couldn' t remedy the problem to make
the show second mota. Rowd y Blasdell
moved into second and held it through
lap 10. when he dropped to th ird after
being passed by Kelly Whelchel (Suz) .

look out. Steve Jacobs (Yam) gave .
chase for a fourth in the first mota.
. The second rnoto saw J im Anderson
aga in grab gobs and hole it into the
first tum. He held out for a perfect
score _ with Kevin Lane putting
together a 5-2 for second overall. Steve
Jacobs , Woodland , Washington
picked up a 4·6 and third overall while
Chris Selnes (Suz) wired a 9-g tally.
Seines is coming on strong and will be
my pick to give Anderson a battle by
season's end. The 250cc Pro class lined
up 20 strong and by now the
confidence in the new gate was total.
Anderson, th is time on a red Honda
got the lead after the second lap and
nobody could catch him as the
hotshoes flew the double jump. Tim
Michletsch (Yam) , riding for Yamaha
of McM innville, gave chase but
couldn't do it by finish line time .
Darryl Zumstein (Hon) raced to a
third while Darold Baker (Hon) got
fou rth. The second moto Michletseh
caught flame and flat hauled. lie
didn't look back to get a 2·1 and first
overall. Phil Larson (Suz) raced for
awhile. but tired a little and dropped
off the pace. Anderson put together a
l ·g for second and Zumstein pulled a
third overall .
Open Pro time and on the line . It
was Michletseh benefit day as Tim
blasted both motos with competition
from Clay Azar and Skeet Hise (Yam),
the only two close enough to count.
Fred Keene was in there the first moto,
but had a DNF for the second.
Michletseh won with a perfect score
_
and Reid Goldman (Hus) put together
consistent threes and fours to gamer
second overall. Mark Kim (Mai) went
2;5 for third.
Where was the National Champion,
Rapid Rick Burgett? Posing with his .
fans for pictures and signing
autographs. He was still out there
when the sun went down, handing out
Yamaha stickies to all that wanted '
them. R ick just doesn't forget who his
friends are.
