Two lousy 15·30 minute motos on dry tracks, high entry fees, and outrageous gate fees. The promoters are yelling insurance, the riders rip-off, but nothing is being done about the problem. If the motorcycle parks were not making money they would not be remaining open. Don't the parks see that they are, losing more and more good riders and racers each week because of their prices? It has become a rich man's sport . Slowly more and more devoted racers are being squeezed out because we can no longer afford the luxury of racing . Don't the parks see that by their ridiculous prices. soon no one will be able to afford to go riding, and they will have to shut down? Saddleback, Racing World , Indian Dunes, and Carlsbad, they are all doing it , and we're just taking it. Carlsbad is the worst of all of them. The track is never prepared except for the USGP . there is no lunch truck, no overnight camping, and what's worse , no park ridingl The park is off limits. Only the track is to be used. And this we get for our $5 a day, • $12 10 $17 entry fees? In the desert they can go racing locally for $6 to $ 10 all day , no restrictions and we are supposed to go IwO usually shortened motos and be content? My husband and 1 are just about ready to throw in the towel on what used 10 be a great family sport. that was always fun and at an affordable price. We are being ripped off and just sitting back and letting it happen . instead of doing something about the problem. By taking care of this problem we can insure that in the future we will still be able to enjoy the sport we all love. Photo by Action Oz. 4 Earlier this year, a neighborhood group calling itself the South Central San Jose Neighborhood Association petitioned the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds Board of Supervisors . protesting the increase in racing dates at the County Fairgrounds due to th e closing of the San Jose Speedway. This increase ' was for the super-modified autos , but the group is also dissatisfied with the motorcycle mile event. . One homeowner testified that he took readings of 112·115 DbA in his house (which was built near turns three and four of the mile oval) during races . He and the SCSJNA proposed to limit noise levels to 55 DbA (about the level of normal conversation .. . Editor) along with other curfew limitations and dust control measures. They are doing this despite the fact that their homes were built bordering the track , not vice-versa . Bob Barkhimer Associates, promoter of both motorcycle and auto racing at the Fairgrounds, has offered to build a sound barrier between the track and the houses . This has met with opposition from three fronts: 1. County Noise Control Engineer Gerald Starkey has seemingly sided with the SCSJNA and thinks that building the wall "dedicates the Fairgrounds 10 racing;" 2 . Supervisor Sig Sanchez supposes that Barkhirrier would want a monopoly on all racing events at the Fa irgrounds ; 3. The SCSJNA views the wall as not aestheti cally pleasing and a collecting board of grafitti. The Board of Supervisors hired Industrial Nois e Service , Inc . to do acoustical tests during the racing season. Tests were done both on the track and iry the neighborhood. The results were turned in to the fair board who will study them and make recommendations 10 the supervisors on Nov. 21. I, for one, do not want the mile to leave San Jose. This is a racing town! This year we hosted two AMA mile events. one half mile, six or more automobile races including the Johnny Key Memorial , and a half mile exhibition race that was held during the Santa Clara County Fa ir and packed in people just like an AMA National event. The San Jose Mile is viewed by fans, riders and journalists as The Mile. The mile needs our help. The SCSJNA is organized , but most fans do not know of th e mil e's impending doom. Cycle News readers, especially the ones who live in Santa Clara County and have the power to vote for or against the supervisors. shou ld After several months of ' wheelin and dealing with the various public agencies in the San Diego area i search of riding areas , I have foun that the National Forest Service is i the best position to provide that plac. to ride, and they are doing somethin about it now! How many riders know there a three open riding areas unde development in Cleveland Nationa Forest and that the Forest Recreation Officer is concerned over not enougrr' use of either area? These areas are free of admission fees. All you need is your green stickie and an approved U.S.F.S . spark , a r reste r. More land is ava ilable, but it takes input by the riding public. Help us get yet another open riding area just east of Escondido , CA in a terrific area for everyone to use . Dear Sir: As an ORV enthusiast, I have become increasingly alarmed at the shortfall of open areas for off-road vehicle we. I am a motorcyclist who has been forced to travel further ' arid further to ride my bike. With over 50% of the offroad vehicles in the United States being registered in only three California counties (Orange, Riverside and San Diego), it is paradoxical that these same counties are so short of public ORV facilities. The state, county and city governments have been slow to react to this bonafide recreational need for various reasons. The private sector has quickly filled the need for cloeed course type competition, which docs - not satisfy my needs. I need an open area on natural terrain with some developed trails to ride out from. Many of my friends are trail bike enthusiasts or are involved in observed trials or endures. We do not need developed facilities, only a place to park and ride for the day. _ I am particularly interested in the Four Corners/Barona area and the Black Canyon/San Ysabel Creek area due to accessibility and adjoining B.L.M. and other public lands.
