Jim Pomeroy combined a seventh and a sixth for fifth overall. 8 he rides , and I have a lot of respect for him ," . The Hurricane came back for the second moto determined to do better. He exploded out of th e starting ga te and disappeared onl y to come around leading the first lap and find it red flagged . Different obse rvations had th e starting gate either fall ing la te in on e sect ion or a number of top rid ers in one sect ion had jum ped it . Either way , the AMA called a resta rt and Bob na iled the holeshot again . This time when he ca me around leading the field he found a green flag and left it tattered in his wake as he walued off int o the distance from the rest of th e field which included Pomeroy in second , then Smith , Howerton, Mosier , Tripes. Sem ics, Noyce, LaPorte and Sun . Roger DeCoster was back in 15th place and seemed the only rider determined to make the best of a poor start. Tripes seemed disheartened by 'his sixth place off the line and let it dissolve during the rema ining 45 minutes down to 10th. Teammate Pomeroy lost a couple of positions as well, and Kent Howerton throttled his way up to second ahead of Smith and stayed there. Nearly every lap DeC?Ster made th e best of things and picked off ride rs, event ually crossing the fin ish line right behind Smith for fourth pla ce. Hannah , though , had put th e crowd to sleep by th e middle of th e ra ce as he styled his way int o a 30 ·40 second lead that lasted all the way to th e finish line . With only two ra ces remaining in th e Trans·AMA MX Series, Bob has it all but won . Next weekend a t Lake Whitney should certainly see him cla im the long .sought-after ti tle of Ameri ca 's firs t Tran s·AMA Champion. T he biggest ra ce ever at Cycle World with approx imately 20 ,000 spec tators on hand also proved to be the last to be held there. One of the best tracks on the AMA circuit goes to land developers and .will certainly be missed by the riders and fans alik e. 250cc Support Steve Wise couldn't dodge away from the bad luck which has tailed him all this season to usually prevent him from putting two good motos together on anyone day. The opening 250cc Support moto fray saw Wise as the class of the class as he disappeared with the win , leaving Warren Reid . Mickey Boone and Mark Gregson to scrap for second, and Greg Theiss , John Savitski and Marty Moates in a tussle for fifth . (Above! Britain's Graham Noyce took seventh. (Below! Riding a 79 390CR, tested elsewhere in this issue, Chuck Sun was sixth. The second moto saw Wise bail off his Honda twice though , causing a huge deficit that hard charging could onl y correct back up to seventh place. Meanwhile , Boone on the works Kawasaki and Reid with his CR·250 Honda provid ed the handlebar twisting action which kept the fans fever pitched as they cut each other off for the lead every other tum. John Savitski on the DG Yamaha and Greg Theiss with his privateer Honda were providing the same show stopping clash for third position. Both LOP riders who did well in round one, Gregson retired with bikes problems and Moates threw in the towel when he flipped in a highspeed uphill whoop section. Mickey Boone's second moto victory netted Kawasaki another 250cc Support class win: "In that first moto I twisted my ankle which has been sore since Unadilla , and it took me a while to get going and work up to third place. The second moto I got a good start and tha t was all I needed, except perhaps for a little less weight to match Warren Reid on those uphills. The only way I could stay ahead of him for the finish was to hold my bike wide open going down the hills . That's the only time a big guy like me can get ahead of those kids ." Series points leader Brae Glover wasn 't happy about his sixth overall for the day and his quicltly narrowing points lead. "I crashed four times today, three in the first moto and once in the second. I just couldn't control my bike. It seemed to be hopping all over the track. I couldn't go any fister without falling even more," he said. • Results 500cc INTERNATIONAL: 1. Bob.- 2·1 lV_t. 2.
