Burtt blasts DeAnzaMX By Ron Lawson SU N NYMEAD, CA, OCT. 15 It was another clear cool d ay in Riverside Cou nty and once again -the hills around Su nnymead became host to the DeAnza motoJossers. This wee k the best action was ;?n ce again found ' in the 250cc P~o class wh,.:;re Da rry l Lurnbattis ( Mal~, Danny Burtt (Suz) a nd Ph il 'rhorstense n (Hon) clashed in a knockGown.drag·o ut battle for top money. 'Moto one saw Honda of Co rona rider 'q-norstensen gra b his usu al holeshot in 'Sr,ite of an arm inju ry susta ined last w~k. Burtt and Lumbattis were right behind and it didn't take long for orstensen to start feeling the p r essu re . Lumbartis moved into second on the second lap and kept the gas on. Two laps' later he was ' in the lead. Thorsiensen's arm was giving him a hard time. but he was far from giving up. He held off Bu rtt until the seventh lap when his rear brake pedal broke, forcing him to fall back in the pack. When the checkered flag came out , it saw Lumbattis, Burtt , Jim Cooke (Kaw) and Thorstensen in that order. . . ' Round two saw Cooke jump int o the lead with David Hopkins (Su z) in tow . Burtt , Lumbattis and Thorstensen wer e cl um ped up behind them in clo se quarters . Within two laps, Burtt had broken free and taken over th e lead , wh ich he never gave up. Lumbattis took his time getting out of traffic and that cost him the ra ce . By the halfway po int Burtt had a tremendous lead over Lurnbattis and Thorstensen. who were still very close. Lumbattis started to ree l in the leader in the closing laps , but the effort was too late. Burtt took · the overall win with Lumbattis , Thorstensen, Hopkins and Cooke following . The ho n ors for most exciting Sportsma n ~ace goes to the 250~c Intermediate class. Bra nd on Baldw in (Suz) was on top of the first two laps, but lost the lead to Bob Ken (Hon) . Robert Ripley (Hon) and Mike Wright (Hon) were locked in a ba ttle for third that lasted the entire race . On lap eight they both passed Bald win for second and kept right on going. Ripley held the edge right up to the checkered flag. but Wright went berserk at the last moment and went across the finish line in a dead heat with Ripley . crashing in the process. . The scorers gave it to Wright for determination if nothing else . The next moto was a total change. Ripley got the holeshot and led the race for four laps before he fell . First p lace was then inherited by Bob White (C-A) . On lap seven John Bumga rner (Hon) took over the lead and held it for two laps . In the ' m ea n tim e , Ba ld win and Da vid Stewa rt (Yam) were working their way u p from near last p lace starts. T he two of them were going through at least one rider a lap a nd near the end of the race, they passed Bumgarner and took the lead . Ba ldwin finished first bu t too k t hird overa ll beh ind Wright, who too k a t hird that m oto , and Ken. Results PEE WEE: I. Kombi,1y Robinson IItal; 2. Natha n Slater IIndl. MINI BEG: 1.
