Suzuki Fall National Tefherton, Almond topCMMCMX By Rod Eschenburg ELCAJON , CA , OCT. 15 Ray Tetherton was the outstanding rider at Barona Oaks, grabb ing victories in both the Stock and Mod ified Minicycle 12-16 26 Intermediate classes and making a big comeback win in the 125cc Novice motorcycle class. Tetherton's win in the Mod ified Minis was a three stra igh t sweep with only token competition from David Crowson , but in the Stock class, it was a different story as Jon Jon Belisle, who had no 9-11 Intermediate class to ru n in , put on a great show . Belisle, with two seconds, must ha ve decided that it was time to show next year's competition (he turns 12 soon) what he could do . The th ird moto was unreal with the lead changing between him and Tethenon five times before Belisle took the checkered for a second overall. Belisle's last lap side by side downhill bash with Tetherton and the resulting out muscling of the older and larger rider in the switchback will long be remembered as one of the greatest rides ofthe 1978 seasonl As always, the motorcycle classes produced some great competition with the outstanding class being the 125cc Intermediates where Jeff Almond had a career high win in downing rising star Scott Hamilton with a tie break er third-mete second-place finish over Ham ilton. Third overall rider Brian Thomas blasted bot h Almo nd and Hamilton in the third moto after a third and a founhl Tim Hal e went three for three in the IOOcc Novice class for his last win as a Novice; th e 15-year·old will be an Intermediate next race. And finally , in a class that is not usually this competitive , th e 9-11 Junior Cycle Stock riders had a race to be remembered: Scott Zastrow and Tim Heath went at it for three motos with the overall com ing right down to the last 25 feet of the third moto as the leader Heath made the mistake of looking back to see where Zastrow was (he was right therel) , got into the marbles and slid down . Zastrow crossed the line first for th e overall. Three more programs remain on th e Barona Oaks schedule with th e next race on Nov. 5. Results STOCK MINI EXPERT: 1. Scott Swift lSuzl; 2. Healey, McCullough boogie at NMA 'all series By Carol Campbell TRABUCO CANYON , CA. OCT. 15 Racing World's newly manicured Marty Smith course was the set · Series . As the gate dropped on the first moto of the 9-11 85cc Min icycle Stock Intermediate riders , Mike Healey (Suz) pulled the holeshot over Paul Den is (Iral) and Kun Hendricksen (It a) . Going into a sweeper, Denis went down, putting Hendricksen into second. Den is regained his composure and managed to maintain third place, but was soon back in front of Hendricksen , meanwhile , Healey had been busy extending his lead over the rest of the pack. As Denis began to close the gap between first and second, as luck would have it, he layed it down again bumping him all the way back to fifth place and no time to catch Healey. Tension began to mount as the stan of the second moto was .about to get underway. It was Denis off the line with Healey breathing down his neck . Hendricksen, who had been running third , decided to check on soil samples, which put him fifth . Mean while . Denis and Hea ley were hard at it . Den is never let off the throttle and when it was all over , he got the second moro win , but it was Healey taking the overall win with a 1-2 fin ish . Hendricksen finished with a 2-5 score for second overall and Denis had to settle for th ird place honors with a 5-1 score . T ibbs McCullough (Yam), who only last year was riding as a 12 and over Novice Min i rider, is making a name fo r himself as a IOOcc Expert. McCullough took ba ck -co-back wins in the IOOcc Mod ified Expe rt class over such tough competitors as T im Hines (Yam) and Jom Coffee (Yam). It was McCullough pulling th e holeshot s with Hines and Coffee in close pursuit. No matter how hard they tried , Hines and Coffee couldn't do anything but battle it out with each other as McCullough just ran a flawless race. Coffee finished with a 5-2 for second and Hines took home third place honors with a 2-5 score. Results PEE WEE STOCK , . Ilobbv Dlugoo; 2. Jomio : Cooney 1Suzl: 3. KevinSomfotd lSud. JR.
