Scrambles Championship , combined their motocross and 4- • 44 , wheel d rive tracks to make up a rough. demanding new course for the KMSA ' Classic . W inner Steve Dix on h is Mono-Mods/Council Grove Ya m a ha tu rn ed 5:40 laps consistently throughout the day . Glen McCl u re led at the start followed by j im McBr'ide, Mitch Rorabaugh . Dix and Lonnie Kegle. By the second lap Dix had moved int o second place and was beginning to close onMcfllure. The du o began to stretch out a cons iderable lead on the rest of the championship entry but on lap four . in a tight left . McClure laid it down and broke off a clutch lever . McClure tried to restart, his _Yamaha and finally got awa y but Dix had gained a 40'second lead on him . About the 90-m inute ma rk Dix 's expansion chamber received a slight crack which got bigger as his bike got slower and McClure was closing as he pulled off to look over th e problem. After a qu ick inspection. he took off aga in to fin ish the race off with a win . Marty Crowley moved up to pass Rorabaugh for 125cc honors as did Monty Rodsey who passed McBride. Richard Fog le passed. up two hare scrambles in hi s own backyard territory of Ottawa and Lawrence and came from mid -pack to pass Kegle for the 200cc class win . Fogle's son Ricky won the Minicycle rac e andjust about hasthe KMSA #1 plate clinched in tha t class. " proved no exception as Green won both 100cc motos by a one-half lap margin . Phillip Weintz ran second behind the high flying Green. with . Tom Anderson charging to a third place finish . J. D. Sanderson chased Mark Budke in the 125cc Pro class for three laps before working past the smooth riding Nebraskan. Once in the lead, Sanderson began to open up a huge gap. as Budke battled with Dan Hoover over second place. Sandy got careless toward theend of the moto and hit a course tire. which bent his shifter back to the cases. Budke held off Hoover for the win , while a one-geared Sanderson motored to third. Moto two was an easy victory for Sanderson as he went wire-to-wire for the overall. Hoover grabbed for a little extra and defeated Budke for second in the moto . Les McCain chalked up yet another street legal championship to finish the three race season undefeated . Rand Laymon tried to halt the McCain winning streak bu t finished a distant second in both motos . McCain won all six rnotos at the Atwood track th is season . Larry Chvatal slipped past Jerry jones, Mike Domsch and Larry Morris in turn one to na b the lead in the Open class . Morris . who had started in fourth. was soon battling Yamaha mounted jones for second and after working past jones. he began to reel in Chvaral, The two riders staged a ', private war for three laps before Morris got by in a comer. Chvatal was unable to muster a challenge as Morris motored away . The deciding moto had Chvatal and Morris drag racing into turn one side by side, with Morris coming out the quickest. The two chased each other for the entire moto but the results never changed. jerry jones had a good ride and placed third both heats. while Mike Domsch netted fourth . Keith Lteaton won both 250cc junior motos-the largest class of the day. Lteaton easily won the first heat with Kevin Wagoner charging from m id -pack for second. Rich Dozbaba jumped into the lead in moto two but .soon lost his position to Lteaton. Wagoner fell along with Tom Herman and Lee Adams in a three bike crash and still finished fourth, while Phillip Weintz, a first moto crash victim. sailed to third in heat two without any close encounters this time around.
