' Fast Frank Word tried his level best in the 250cc Expert main but young Bobby Cunnington had everything go his way for a change, and won the biggest race of his you~g career, The former Hodaka Way rider. now on a 250 Yamaha. had only a little trouble from Word in the race that paid seven spots but saw little of the big guns after the heat races eliminated Mike Inderbitzen, Dave Ryan and Mike Delacy. , Cunnington took off fast and kept It there to show the more experienced riders that when he makes the AMA Junior Pro tour next year. he is going to be tough and hard to beat. Bob Gibson took third on his Bultaco over Chico regular Jeff Fowler and Brian Pecore. Dennis King (Dublin Yam) returned to some fine racing style, winning the combined 360 /500cc Novice show over lawyer Danny Hunt on the SK Bultaco. ) Rodger Slack returned to the ra~ing bit on the Boss-framed 360 Yamrnie to hold off a late starting Rick Delacy for that Expert class win, Kirk King took the lead in the 500~c Expert main toward the end as BIll Calicura and Rick Eklund couldn't keep their lines low e~ough., Billy Scott made It a big two-f?rtwo day, easily winning the 500 JUnior class on the S&K TT 500 with Monty Latif doing some find passing right at the end to take second on the KR Racing TT500 monoshock, ~ In the big bike show, Mike Inderbitzen rode off to glory on the ex-Skp Aksland Yamaha 750 with Rick Delacy again doing the catching up to take second on the Yamaha World 750. OCT. 8 Pacific Northwest road racers A lone racer scrapes the tar at S.l.R:s final RR of the 1978 season, were granted perfect fall weather for the final meet of the season at Seattle International Raceway. ·' Practice began with sunshine and good dry track conditions, yet spectators witnessed a rash of crashes typical of a rain -slick track. To make . up lost time after a six-rider crash that sent Roger Stanley to the hospital, . riders voted for single double-length heats. This proved effective. though a few racers objected to the changed format and got their entry fees returned , Racing, finally underway, saw Jay Burshell and Dick Wascher win 100 and 250cc GP singles , respectively. Gordie Vanskike again won the 1~5cc multi GP in this 12-lap combined event. Competition is fierce ' in 410cc production at SIR, with Honda fours and RD Yamahas dominating, but many models show some succes~ including Honda Hawks, Kawasaki triples and even XS400 Yamahas. In this race, Brian Sutton (Yam) led at the flag. Joe Davis and his 400:4 Honda equipp.ed w.ith stock s~ocks did well , placing SIxth m the 24 bike field. Chuck Dukquits' 250 Can-Am beat Dave Wilson's R0250 in this combined event, There has been somewhat of an exodus from the Open Cafe class to 410cc, but the 10 entries gave a good, loud show. Chris Michak's built '75 Z·I led three other Kawasakis to the finish. Fourth went to Rocky Phoenix and his 650 which has run with and sometimes beat Suzuki 1000s this season. Bruce Lind , nursing a hand injured at Laguna Seca last month , was . conspicuously absent from 250cc GP, Steve Schaeffer seized his TZ 250 Yamaha during practice. First off t~e line was fast Bob Loose on his Yamaha, but Dick Wascher. . riding Lind's 250, caught him by turn one. Loose managed to slip by and still led by lap seven. when Wascher's chain broke on the downhill out of turn two , Loose looked like a sure winner until 30 seconds later when he seized in the chicane and coasted to a stop , Canadian Mike Whittlesey zoomed by and led Dick Mullane at the checkered. In 750cc Production , Rocky Phoenix lapped the field on . a 650 Kawasaki. but the fun was watching the scrap for the next three spots . Eventually Brian Sutton's RD·350 took second ahead of Dave Zenger and Scott Moon on 400-4's. . The 15 contenders in 550cc Cafe were granted a wann·up lap after lunch. Speculation was rampant all day as to whether Dick Wascher's trick 250 Honda could ace Gary Gallagher's reigning Kawasaki 400. They led the pack into the second turn and Wascher went down taking Gallagher with him . Wascher was taken to the hospital with a broken back, but is now recovering. The rest of the racers continued around to the start-finish where the race was red flagged. and continued a half hour later in an abbreviated 10-lap form. Rodgers' rotary Suzuki led the race, followed by two SR500 singles and ' an SP370 Suzuki. Bruce Lind was again missed in Open GP, but the race ~as colot!ul enough, with the track record being broken twice! Peter Puhakka's TZ700 tore off, followed by the elaborate Holland-framed Kawasaki 1000 of Henry Verschuur, Jim Dunn made a cameo appearance on his 1£750 and eventually settled for third. According to club officials, . Verschuur broke Greg McRae's I :34.4 record. but Puhakka's Yamaha turned close to 1:33 in winning. Relatively few injuries. good racing and rare Washington sunshine balanced out the crashes and late start, resulting in a smaller $430 purse from withdrawn entry fees . Hopes are high for 1979 racing in the Northwest - and British Columbia. • . Results 125 GP SINGLE: 1. Jay Burahell (Honl; 2. Steve Elmer IHon). 250 GP SINGLE: 1. Dick Wescher (Hon); 2.
