(Contin uedfrom page 19) tha t led bet ween the former bui ldings. Scavengers again! Ron al d Mill er also had this story to tell about the New Da le area. "Dave Poste and his wife Anna came to Dale in 1923 and took a lease on the Virginia Da le Mine . Soon after Dave and Anna Poste a rrived at New Dale. a chauffeur-driven car ru m bled up the dirt road to the town . 'As the dust settled back to t he ground , a woman stepped out of the car and looked around . After getting her bearings she left the chauffeur with the car and ' went alone up the draw to the south of town. She walked as one who knew where she was going and what she was looking for. In a short time, she returned to the car with an iron box. Settling back once more into t he plush interior of the car, shefurtively loo ked inside the box . One witness swears that he ca ught a glimpse of jewelry . Seemingly satisfied that the contents of the box were co rrect, the woman told the d rive r to take her back to the 'Inside' (town) . "Dave Paste thought that the woman was a girl who had once lived in the little shack on the hill above town . 'The only thing we could figure was tha t it tied in with a robbery of , $25,000 in ' bullion from one of the mines in 1910 ,' he said . 'I told Sam Joiner about it. He nodded when he heard my description of the woman . Seemed to know who she was.'" New Dale had its .sa loo ns and red light district too. but they're gone ; carted off by tourists in the 1930's and meta l scroungers during World War Two. '( Wagon fre ighters. as usua l, made most of the money in the gold fields. Everything had to be hauled in. Wood was especia lly precious. Miller writes t h a t , "Tom Pierce (one of the first 'freighters) hauled most of the lumber for the town of Virginia Dale . .. Pierce seems to be the only early resi dent of the area that had Ind ian trouble. Generally the Indians were peaceful. There we re a few Serra nos and Chemehuevis living at the Oasis, and the Pai utes were on a reserva tio n near t he Colorad~ River . T o m often reminisced wit h his fami ly a bout trips to Virgin ia Dale. He recalled that on several trips in succession he was held u p by three arm ed Indians . T hey took only lum ber , but it was qui te a nuisa nce to be stopped and robbed every trip . After a while the b anditry ";to pp ed . Tom rem em bered that , 'it was a funny thing, but on one of m y trips out of DaleI found three dead Indians along the trail.' He a lways denied kn owing the cause of their deaths." T ough country! • :> Gotta tell another snake story I heard from one of the " locals ." It seems that recently a deputy sheriff was staked out o ne night at the edge of Dale Dry Lake. He was seated on the co ld wintery grou nd , using a big rock for a backrest and wai ting in misery for a reported ma riju ana smuggler to land his plane on the lake bed. Finally, at daybreak , when t he aircraft didn't appear , he got stiffly to his feet a nd found a rattler be tween his boots . Luckily, the snake too was h al f-frozen a nd una b le to strike, o r maybe he was tryi ng to get warm next to the lawman . ~ Anyway , enough sea stories. I got my p hotographs and had a nice long, relaxi ng ride as well as turning th e clock back for a few ho urs. Still, the best part of the adventure was yet to come. That hap pened when I got back to the cabin , tired bu t happy, and my wife said , "Honey, why don't you buy yourself a new bike? You deserve one." How can I fight that kind of logi c? So, the following week I beat it down to T &O Yamaha and bought m yself a 500cc four-stroke . Can't wait to find another "excuse" to go riding . • ; I III • ~ t 00 r-.. c::Tl 1"""'4 1"""'4 I-< (1) ..c 8 (1) > 0 z· In Spain a squad of test riders f logged the production '78 Pursang MX 11 t hrough 4O 'tnin ute motos for days on : end w ithout failure.
