233 to 217 points victory over the Rest of the World . Beating the Rest of the World was one thing. but Americans seemed a rather different kettle of fish. particularly as Roberts was back in action . and the British team looking a bit secondhand aft er their earlier ef forts . Sheene had found his Suzuki was sucking oil out of the gearbox into th e cran kcase and was apprehensive about his chances of fini shing the ra ce. while Ron Haslam was on Rog er Marshall's 500cc Beal Yamaha after his own 750cc Yamaha had seized. and Ste ve Manship was on Parrish's spare 750c c Yamaha because his bike was sick . British fans then had a few anxious moments when Sheene had to change two plugs on the line but . that fixed . he was awa y th ird behind Robe rts and Bald....;in though the exhausts were smoking bad ly. Sheene was up to second spot a lap la ter and began to catch Ken ny while Bald win lost ground . T he crowd cheered and th e commentator went wild as- he watched Roberts a nd Sheen e battling away on his television mon ito r. Bo th Sheene a nd Roberts led for a time on the eighth and ni nt h laps but . sta rting the last lap . it was the American who was ahead. At the hairpin . Ro bert s slid off when the front wheel slid away and Sheene, triumphant , went on to win a nd to gain revenge for his defeat at Ken ny's hands the previous day . " I was having problems with the front brake and 1 had to pump it to make it work . I t hough t about letting Barry go . but then J sa id . 'Hell no Roberts, go for it ,' then the front brake locked at the hairpin and that was that ," said Kenny, who was given a pillion ride back to the pits by Sheene after the race . . 1 he pair had broken the lap record several tim es during their epic duel . with Robert s end ing the d ay as record holder with a lap of 1m 54 .4 s. 98.49 mph . Ba ldwin was second with Aksland third . The British boys packed th e midfield p laces despite losing Dirchburn, who had been sixth until his accident. -M a rsha ll was fourt h followed by Pa rrish . who ni pped ahead of Dale Singleton two laps from ho me . America , despite this defeat , were overall winners. But if the results had been based purely on Sunday's races. it would have been Britain in runner-up slot and not the Rest of the World . _Roberts , Hansford , Cecotto 'a nd others could not or would not face the 10-lap all -comers' event that con eluded the meeting . And the crowd suffered m ore blows when Sheene and Hartog retired early in the race . - Howeve r, Baldwin . who made up the starter's mirid for him , would have -gi~en them all a ru n for their money . He won convincingly to emphasize his po tential , chased in vai n by Virgi nia Ferrari and Graziano Rossi. u nt il Rossi tumbled on th e last la p .
