Stephenson storms
CRRe road race
By Mike Reilly
HENDERSON . T X. SEPT. 16
Paul Stephenson , aboard the
Storm's Cycle Ducati Desmo ,
dominated the large bore muscle
bikes at Oakhill Raceway. The
last sched uled Cent ral Road Ra cing
Club event of 1978 saw Stephenson as
well as four other riders score multiclass wins .
Paul. known as the Hogman , is awe. somely fast on this track, even on a
good da y, but on th is date he was ,
superb. His wins with the Ducati
included the Open Cafe class over Da n
Morrison (BMW of Ft. Wo rth) and
Doug Polen on a GS750 Suzuki, and
Open Cafe as Stephenson ran off from
Benny Del Monico (Edward's MC
TX350 ) and Kevin Stasney on a
Honda Fou r. To top off his da y's work .
Paul pulled ou t the 410cc Production
win on his four-cylinder Honda after a
tough figh t with Tony Cherne on a
Yamaha and ex -motocrosser Jake
DeBoe on a Honda Hawk.
Joe Patton scored a double win in
750cc and Open Production on the
Glenn's Honda as the 1978 points
leader had a slugfest both races with
David Cheek (GS750 Suz). Cheek. th e
only rider to beat Patton this yea r . was
short about one second each race from
another win .
Bucky Patterson, CRRC's absolute
master of the pint size production
. bikes, piloted his trusty Can-Am single
to smash wins in the 250cc Production
and 250cc Cafe classes. In both races
his runnerups were the same, second
George Lloyd (C -A) a nd Richard
Haecker (Yam) third.
Andy Robbins and the Sam's
Motorcycle Sales 350 Honda single
own every bit of the Oakhill race track
but the title to the land, or so it must
seem as for the third time th is year
Robbins was pure genius .winning the
410, 655 , and 750cc Cafe classes.
David Bearden , a lanky smiler from
Killen , was all business in the 500 and
250cc GP classes on his Yamaha TZ
250 , winning both races on th e tig ht
Henderson course that is particularly
tough on the highstrung GP bikes and
riders. Da vid had quite a battle with
Benn y DelMonico in the 500cc class
and Andy Robbins in the 250c c class .•
