CA . rode a street licensed turbocharged Kawasaki to the fourth fastest time of 197 . Scott, an employee of American Turbo-Pak. took one of their ZI -R TC·s. added full racing p'reparation and a small road race fairing to do the job. He set near identical records of 194 and 197 in the 1,000 and 1.300cc classes by just changing the pistons and cylinders. Taking a look down the record results you'll find ' a remarkable feat took place by Harry B. Fair. This 27 year-old lad from Lakewood, CO, set six class records with one bike. That had never been accomplished before. since you can only run a bike in one class a day, and the weather usually wipes out a day or so of running. Harry ran various combinations to enter with a modified frame or an altered frame (altered frame class allows the rider a lower frontal area). with and without a fairing . and gasoline or fuel classes . His fastest record was 135 mph with the Yamaha wa tercooled 250cc road racer. : Brian Eriksen , 30 , of West Milford. NJ. installed a .5m m offset crankpin to increase the stroke of his 350cc Yamaha by .040" . By so doing he was eligible for the 500cc class . He already owns many of the 350cc class records. He then proceeded to make a shambles of five class records, the best oeing a 157 mph run . Peter Grufstedt took home to North Stonington, CT , four more class records in the 125cc bracket. The best one at 137 mph with a dust bin type fairing running in the streamliner class . H is little two-cylinder. watercooled , Morbidelli road racer makes many bigger bikes look slow. Todd Frank, 20 . Austin. TX. swung .a leg over last year's production record setting ZI -R Kawasaki and upped the record by three to 150 mph. That may not set very well with Austin HarleyDavidson wherehe's a mechanic , but if he didn't ride it . someone else would have. Like maybe John Haider, 27 . of Austin, TX , who set two records with a more modified Kawasaki. the best at 169 mph. Jack Murphy. a Kawasaki jockey also . sleeved down a 652cc Kaw to run iri the 650cc class. He added a turbo to make up for the lost displacement and set three class records with a 163 mph best. Two mishaps occurred during the event. Roger Swim from Phoenix got off his Harley while attempting to start it and broke his collarbone. John Ulver of Camas. WA , had his Vincent's transmission seize which sent him sliding/ on his back at 120 mph resulting in a bad salt rash and possible broken wrist. One piece or zip-together leathers would have helped considerably. . A few non -record . notable performances include : Rick Coatman's 146 mph on a Honda CBX ; David Matson's 165 on an open frame Vincent; Mike La Follette's 148 on a Moto-Guzzi. Conditions of the salt appeared to be improving this yea r. Except for some problems in dragging the course. the salt seemed a little thicker and slightly smoother this year . This is one event where the EPA has actually been taking steps in our favor . They have been working toward the preservation of the race track portion of the salt knowing that the races in no way deteriorate the local en vironment. However . they need our encouragement to keep working at it. If you are interested in attending this event next yea r contact the Bonneville Nationals. Inc. • Box 2729 .
