Hlarka, Parry top
ARRARR
By Jim Lester
American Road Racing Associa tion promoter Pat Manning de scribed Sunday's rider turnout
at Willow Springs as the smallest
he's had fo r a road race all season. H e
blamed the small turnout on . first . an
A.F.M . road race the same weekend a t
Sea rs Point , and , second , a n
unfounded rumor that his club doesn't
carry rider insurance. Actually, there's
$5,000
cove rage
(with- $100
deduct ibl e) . And restauranteur /racer
Earl Smith sta rted a " be n evolent
fu nd" to ai d riders who can't affor d
t he deduct ible.
The 250cc GP rac e was a real barnburner. Dennis Parry (Yam), Ron
H larka , Wally Karpynec (Yam) and
Eddie Lawson (Yam) spent the first
three la ps (eigh t m iles) in a tight " Blue
Angels" diamond formation. Lawson
was the first to drop off the pa ce, with
Karpynec slipping back halfway
through th e race. Hlarka (Specialist II
Yam, 1:39 laps) finally go t around
Parry on th e sevent h of 10 laps, and
held on to win despite being slowed by
"la p pe d" traffic at the flag .
After four la ps in the Open GP rac e
Steve Mallonee (Kaw, 1:38) had bu ilt
up a fou r-second lead over Dennis
Parry (Ya m) . But Steve's back tire
began overheating and sliding in the
turns, allowing Parry to close to within
one second with only two laps to go .
Dennis got around Steve on the ninth
lap, and took the victory by one and a
half seconds. Dennis was racing in the
500cc class, though, so Steve still got
credit for the Open GP win.
The 410ce Product ion r a c e
promised to be an in teresting battle,
with Thad Wolfe (Yam) and Malcolm
Hill (Ya m ) tied for the class points
lead , and Ed Toomer (Yam ) only five
points back: Wolfe and Toomey
looked fast in practice, with Hill
struggling to bounce back (sorry , no
pun in tend ed) from a horrendous
crash at Riverside the week before .
