~heeJ. Som et hing had flattened it. As the two -minute clock ran, he got it pumped up and rocketed out with another holeshot and the lead. Zack was right behind him, knowing that Wilson's front wheel was flat . Wilson learfor three laps before the front 'end threatened to pitch him over the bars. In t he interest of survival, he cruised on to finish seventh, while Zack wheelied away with the lead and the moto win , which earned him the overall victory . McNamara finished di ird overall , but fourth in the moto as lie couldn't punch a hole in Darryl Zumstein's lines. . Dick Buttner came over from Carson City, Nevada to prove that d esert racers can tum as well as go straight, and he did it in im pressive fashion, scoring twin moto victories for the Open Expert overall. Buttner went so-fast in the second moto that by the end he was la p ping the seventh place rider! Second place finisher Eric McKenna can be proud of his ride also. Plymouth Raceway has never been known as a comeback track , being the home of the famous Hangtown National that gets rougher than the surface of the moon. McKenna came back from a 12th place start in the second moto for second, which he also took in the first. Third . overall was Mark Hilton , who motored his Husqvarna 590 .to fifth in the first moto and third in the second. Results 125cc: 1. Choppv BIoIe IHP Suzl; 2. De"" Woxhom (Suz); 3. TRASK MT. , OR, SEPT. 17 The Sandy Motorcycle Club took advantage of the Trask Mountain area to stage their annual Elk horn Enduro , with weather that was only as it can be near the ocean, sun, rain and snow. First time ou t was at 9:01 a .m. No sooner than the last trio set out, there was a cry, "they're coming back." Some highly intellectual person had changed the course by turning the arrow signs into the wrong direction. This, of course, accounted for all sorts of confusion with riders meeting riders going the wrong direction. Som e entanglements occurred, bu t none resulted in serious problems. A quick huddle was formed and the club officials, led by Pat McBeth, quickly determined that they could restart the whole event nea r the fish hatchery check and only loSe 12 miles. Thus decided, the event started again at 10:49 a.rn, and proceeded ~th a minimum of problems . . t Dean 'Ziegle (Hus), riding the Open class, h ung in like glue to stay close to time through the first three checks . Gary Lande (Suz) , also in the Open class, was also very close to time. John Wilkey (Yam), riding the 200cc class, had maintained an on -time situation for the first three checks, as had Bob Barton (Hus), riding the O pe n class . Things moved al ong without penalty until the fourth check and then the weather came down to control things a bit more. The rain was having its way with the surface. The better-natured riders , coming into the checks, were overheard to say "hey, there's not dust out there!" Time could be made up on the fast fire road areas, but some of the greasy uphill and downhills areas were more than equalizers. Time was beginning to take its toll . Barton had pulled ahead of Wilkey about 2:18 p .m. and missed a tum to lose considerable time , enough to drop off the pace. Wilkey must have paid particular attention to time and markers because he said everything was checking out except that he did pick up a two- minute penalty for arriving at check five a minute too soon. George Paton. (Suz), riding Open, had some problems to dro p a little off his near perfect pace. Pa ton managed a third at the en d of the enduro. Joe Klokkenvold (Yam) had been on a time up to check three, but when he went through the snow a t the higher elevations, the visability problem worsened and he had to slow a bit. Even then he managed to finish second in the 200cc class with a 52-minute penalty. Jerry Asquith (Yam) finished third with a 58·minute penalty. By the time the last riders made it back to base camp it was darkening considerably. Dean Ziegle was the Ope n class winner with Gary Lande picking up second. John Wilkey took the 200cc class win with a penalty of 18 minutes. Most of the riders enjoyed the ride and even understood the problem at the beginning. Enduro ' rid ing is Oregon ain't easyl .
