AMA 0 -37 hare and hound. Scheffers finished second. Tragedy struck the day before when j.T. Wagner of the Cactus Cats died while practicing the bomb run. But this was a fresh new day and the "show" had to go on . The entry 'Was just under 300. Huntington Beach M.C. had had numerous problems the previous year with the markings on their course, causing many riders to be very unhappy. So, this fact , along with the fact that several .rop riders were competing in the Olympiad, the attendance was down . This year, however, much thought had been given to the course. The first loop was laid out as a real "rider's"course with numerous challenging areas instead of the usual "fast and easy" first loop normally laid o ut to accommodate the Beginners and Trail Novices who rode one loop only . The second loop was relatively fast and fun with a few rough spots thrown in to keep the rider on his toes. The race was scheduled for a 9 a .m. start. But shortly before the banner was to go up word came down the line that there would be a 30·minute delay. Finally it was time. The day-glows 'o n the banner truck came down and the banner went up . With the wind blowing as hard as it was, the banner dipped several times before it actually dropped for the start. At the bomb it was Eddy in the lead by about 75 yards . Closing in on the trail next were Scheffers and Dennis c;:i-eene fo llowed closely by Br ad Henson and Marc Cartwright. Rich Schumaker , first C bike , was just ahead of Charlie Hamill. "Flying" joe Lockhart led the Trailbike class. ~ Leading up to the first check was a winding canyon which strung the riders out very nicely. By the time they got to the check Scheffers had the lead . About an eighth of a mile behind him stormed Eddy, with Hamill (who had gotten by Schumaker in the canyon) holding down the third overall spot. Mike Eckardt was fourth , first 250cc , followed closely by Henson. This was Max 's day , however, and no one was going to take it from him. It was Eddy in the lead by the time the riders reached -the second check near Charlie's Place , with Scheffers dropping into the second overall spot while Henson, moving up into third , first 250cc Expert, had pushed C bike. ace Hamill into fourth. Eckardt was now in fifth, with Amateur ace Kern Parke moving into sixth overall, followed by Heavyweight Expert Ed Zarp. Leading the run for the pits, Eddy started stretching his lead ove r Scheffers and Henson . Eric MacCracken was holding onto the second Heavyweight Ama teur spot. Eckhardt dropped int o the second 250cc Expert slot while Parke held onto the lirst place in the Amateur 250cc class . These four riders gave the pit people a thrill as they came int o the pits right on each other's wheels . Dick Camp was lirst Senior in for gas . Schumaker had done a number on the " rrl?'IIiI.'.'.'.__'.'.'.·.':.':.'.-..-..'.'....~ first loop, losing his rear fender and drop ping him too far behind Hamill to be able to catch him again . Bob Doig was the next Senior off the first loop. Kevin Hopkins ha d taken over the lead in the Trailbike class, while Amateur Lori Farmer led the women. Diane Blauer , several minutes later, led the Women Experts off the first loop. First Novice was super biker Greg Winters, riding in the C class. Not long after came "super Senior," 68· year-old Dave Doney on his new IT 175. Two more 'C' Novices came in to pit ; Mike Smith and Scott Anderson. Cindy Max took first Novice girl honors. Eddy moved quickly off the second loop and past the checkered flag as he had built up quite a good lead . Max commented that he had really enjoyed the race and had found the ma rkings were excellent except for one comer early in the race where both he and Henson had overshot. Scheffers took the second overall spot with a front flat tire. Seems there are a lot of flats in this race due to the abundance of rocks. Henson , first 250cc Expert, crossed the finish in the third spot, grinning and saying how much he really enjoyed the course . Parke had continued to ride a ·strong race, moving up to finish fourth , lirst 250 Amateur. Hamill slid in to finish ' first C Expert, fifth overall, followed by Zarp with Cory Timms breathing down his . back and .taking third Heavyweight Expert. In the eighth overall spot was MacCracken, earning the second Open Amateur title. Second 250cc Expert jody Belknap was the next to take the checkered, followed by Mike Eckardt (third 250 Ex) . First Senior, 12th overall, was Dick Camp. Schumaker finished second C Expert, 18th overall, while the second Senior Expert spo t was fought over by Doig and Gus Paull. Doig won . Rick Zajic earned the secon d place honors in the 250cc Amateur class. . Mike "Downhill" Alexander, having moved off his 250cc and onto a C bike, crashed hard early in the race while running second overall , but still managed to pull out a third place linish in his class, however. Kevin Hopkins held onto the lead in the Trailbike class, while it was Gary Hengeveld who clinched the first place honors as a C Amateur. S.nagging the various first honors in the Senior class were: George McCllelan (Trial Ex), George Zuber (250cc Ex), and Al Guzman (C Ex) . Lori Farmer held onto the "first girl" title, with . Diane Blauer earning the second overall girl slot , first Expert. Pete Andelman dropped way back with his rear flat , but still took second Trail Expert. The Novice overall win went to C biker Winters who had dominated the Novice race almost . the en tire time. The overall Beginner win went to a C biker also: Derrick Pairmeru . The secon d overall Novice spot had been ta ken over by 250cc rider Gary Covington while Seni or j oe Payman showed the youngsters how to ride with his third overall Novice finish - first Senior Open. The second Open Novice spot went to Chris Boesen. Anderson and Smith ahd never quit dicing each other for position until - the checkered flag .. AM A D-S8 tearrl race held west of Plas ter City. The two and a half hour timed event allowed six laps around a rough 21-mile course. Fresh from his Riverside SCORE victory, Charlie Well< continued to show his skill as he led the race for three laps on a 125cc machine instead of his usual Open classer. Myers/ Stearns , a 250cc Expert team, gave Welk fits on the straights, as did the Mike Assof/jim Ribley Ope n Amateur team . At the end of one loop, We lk led Assof/Ribley Ope n Amateur team. At the en d of one loop , Welk led Assaf/ Ribley, Kirk Kontiles and Meyers/ " Stearns . On the following lap , Meyers / Stearns were up to second with Aswf/ Ribley secon d, Claude Maynard/Pat Flannagan third, and Bill Silverthorn/ Roger Adsit fifth. . By the third lap, Well< had a threeminute lead on Meyers/Stearns. Third and fourth remained as before, but Silverthorn/Adsit were dicing with the Bobby Galloway/J ohn McDaniel tea m for fifth. Things got a little busy on the fourth lap . Meyers/ Stearns took the lead on the straightaway, but Welk bou nced back into the lead in the rough stuff. However , his lead was short-lived . What he tho ught was a flat tire turned out to be a crunched hub and he parked the bike beside a bank. . Ribley, now second, lost a chain' roller but managed to limp back into the pits where partner Assof took off. Adsit was dicing with Maynard/Flannagan when his chain came loose, wrapped -itself around the countershaft sprocket and broke the case . Losing most of the oil, he limped it in to Silverthorn, who had lost count of the passing bikes. Senior rider Bill Saltzman was moving up steadily, from II rh to fifth . The leaders didn't slow it down any, covering the final lap in 28 mi nutes, lapping many riders fatigued by the heat and rough terrain. Meyers an d Steams notched the win, lapping all but the top 10. Assof/ R ibl ey were second ahead of Mayn ard/Flann aga n and Saltzman. Another Senio r entry, th.!= tea m of Cecil Hollenbeck and Earl Nic hols took a second in class with their 10th overall finish . • Results OVERAll: 1.
