set, already having built up a big lead
on the field. But Rod Spencer, having
gotten by the Rainey/Summers battle.
started to close. It came down to the
final lap , with Monger holding on to
win by a bikelength over Spencer. with
Mike Minnig and Rainey following.
All four rode Yamahas.

Washington's Mickey Fay and John
Hateley led off the line in the first
semi, with Hateley bringing his
Webco/Trackmaster/Hateley Enterprises Triumph around first at the
completion of lap one.. Fay and Gene
Romero occupied the 2-3 positions.
Romero moved up to challenge
Hateley but Scot~ ..Pearson took over
the runner-up position.
Pearson closed on Hateley. and
on the next-to -last lap, got underneath
in turn three and moved Hateley
outward, grabbing the single transfer
position to the National. Fay and
Romero finished third and fourth .
. Only one spot remained in the
National. Again. Eddie Lawson read .
, the starter perfectly and holeshot the
field. Joe Wilson and Mike Kidd
shared the lead with Lawson going
through the first two turns . Kidd held
a narrow advantage as he crossed the
finish line for the first time. Kidd
remained in the lead while Lawson
