Tamietti, Rhyan, Denton cop CMC Carlsbad cash By Mark Kariya CARLSBAD, CA , SEPT. 17 The Flying Machine Factory and Captain's Anchorage Restaurants combined forces Sund ay to pro-. vide a $1200 Pro purse for the 28 - Continental Moto-sports Club's motocross at Carlsbad. Normally and naturally arid . the track held its moisture throughout the day, due to cloud cover, and helped provide a good racing surface. Starting out the day were the 500cc Pros. Steve Rhyan (Cross Up Suz) was first down the muddy start straight. but Arden Hadley (Mai) slipped by. Hadley hung on " to his lead and finished the first lap with Rhya n and Val Tamietti (Mai) gunning for him . Tamietti scooted by R hya n on the downhill on lap four. As they passed the scoring tower to co mplete lap five , Hadley bogged for a moment , letting Tamietti get closer, but managed to get going again before losing his place. Rhyan dropped out with bike problems , advancing Alan Smith (Hus) who'd been gaining steadily once more. Coming around to complete six, Hadley slid out , allowing both Tamietti and Smith by. With first in plain view , Smith went for it. By lap seven, he had made up a good chunk of ground on Tamietti. Lap eight saw him dose up even more before taking ' it by the Maico pilot on the downhill . Luke Messer (M ai) got by Robert Marino (Yam) two laps from the end to make it Smith, Tamietti, Hadley . Messer and Marino. Tamietti and Rhyan traded the lead back and forth for the first few corners of moto two . Hadley and David Gerig (O P Suz) went at it right be hind them. Rhyan held it open longer on the down hill on lap two to grab the lea d . It looked like he was go ne , but a flat rear tire likewise deflated his charge on lap nine. "Tornado" Tarnietti went to the front for good the next lap. Hadley followed him in for second after being involved in a spill with Gerig at the end of lap five.. Hadley was up and away quickly; Gerig dropped back to r;igh~q •• .I~~t . _ ca!"1 • t>:} ~k" • ~o .ga.rp fourth behind Marino . Rhyan kept the air in his tires in the 250cc Pros and led the first moto all the way. FMF rider Randy Hess took second in front of Hadley. In the second moto, Hess grabbed the lead off the start. Hadley held second early. but stopped for repairs to move Rhyan into second. On lap 10, Rhyan passed Hess , who was bothered by front brake problems, to take the lead and the win . Tim Lunde (Mai) and Bob Elliott (Suz) finished second and third. In the overall order it was Rhyan, Hess and Lunde. ' Scott Burnworth (R:D) got the holeshot of the day in moto one of the 125cc Pros. He had two lengths on everybody else by the time he hit the first turn. Trailing him at the end of a lap were Hess ! Bob by Sullivan (Suz), Denton and Chris Harrold (Suz). Rick Johnson (Yam) passed Harrold the next lap as Hess dosed the gap a bit on Bu rns wort h . Denton got a rou nd Sullivan on lap three while Lunde on the Roo settled in behind "johnson after an atrocious start where he was put into the fence off ,the line. avoid ing Denton who someone else had hit . When Johnson dropped back on lap four, Lunde took over fifth . Not content with that , he latched on to Sullivan's fourth the next go 'rou nd . Hess put the moves on Burnsworth for the lead on lap seven. Unfortunately, he retired on lap II with a blown rod. Denton had first at this point over Burnworth. Lunde, Sullivan and Johnson. They finished the moto In that order. Denton grabbed an early lead in rnoto two. Lunde and Mike Tripes !Esc) tangled .~i ng up the uphill while in g~ positron , both going down heavily, Lunde got the brunt of it with a footpeg going through his boot and gashing the to p of his left foot. Other injuries, if any. were not known at the time. Tripes seemed alright , b ut didn't continue. Finishing the lap were Denton, Hess, Bu rnw ort h , Don Fu ller (Suz) a nd Cole Broth ers' rider Tony Go mez in the top five. SCOIl Anderson (Esc) and Sullian came up to fill t he four/five spots the next lap while Burnworth reeled in Hess . Richard BAKERS FIELD , CA, SEPT. 16 America n Mot ocross Enterprises is putting together some good Sa t u rda y night r a cin g at Spro ckets Park. This race saw 125cc Pro rider Jim Pappe (Suz) put together back to back wins in .his second Pro race. Moto one saw Ga ry Jones (Suz) take the holeshot to lead the first half of the race with Pa ppe in c105t' pursuit. Pappe finally made his move on Jones a nd took over the lea d . With Pappe in . first. Mark Abler (Suz) started his push for second , finally taking it from Jones. At the checkered flag it was Pappe, Abler and Jones. The second moto saw Pappe in the lead with Abler and Jones chasing. But Jones had to drop out due to bike problems which left the field open for Pappe and Abler to fight it out. Pappe held on for the win with Abler taking second, In the 250cc Pro dass Andy Jannings made it look easy as he pushed his Murry's Honda to back to back wins . The real battle of the night was going on for second between Dave Haugh (Canoga Park Suzuki Mai) and Honda rider Kirk Sturgeon. Sturgeon was pushing Haugh hard trying to take over second but Haugh was able to h ang on and take second with Stu rgeo n in third. The second moto saw J a nn ings again jump into the lead but this time out Sturgeon had secon d with Haugh in third. Haugh pushed Stu rgeo n until halfway throu gh the race when Haugh went d own and hurt his hand , pu tt in g him out of the race. T he overa~l win went to janni ngs, wit h second gOIng to Stu rgeo n and third goi ng to H on da rider Dave St rong. In the O pe n Pro race the first moto win went to Andy Jannings (Cole Bros. Mai) with second going to Dave Haugh. In the second moto it was ~augh with the holeshot and Jannings In se~ond. Kehoe clobbers AME Indian Dunes MX By H. Richard VALENCIA , CA , SEPT. 10 Erik Kehoe (Yamaha Motor Corp. Yam) is right back (0 winning form after a short layoff. He really showed some great riding with back-to-hack wins in the Mini Expert class . There was a real duel going on in the 125cc Junior class between Bob Schultz (PJ I Yam) and Randy Jones (Crossroads Suz). The two riders battled it out right up to the checkered flag with Schultz taking home the win and second going to Jones. Richa rd Lidyard (Yam) had a good day for himself in the 500cc Junior class with back-to-hack wins . In the first moto , Lidyard got the holeshot ' with Brad Benham (Fullerton Yamaha) in close pursuit. At the checkered flag it was Lidyard in for the win. In the second moto, Pete Postel (Thousand Oaks Yamaha Yam) grabbed the holeshot with Lidyard in second, but some bad luck struck Postel and he went down , giving first overall to Lidyard. There was a good battle on in the 250cc Pro class between Bobby Jones (CH Honda) and Donnie Hansen (Shoemakers Yam) . The first moto win went to Jones with Hansen in second. The second moto saw Jones again in first but some nice riding on Hansen's part enabled him to pass Jones and take the overall win with Jones taking second and third place going to Canoga Park Suzuki rider Dave Haugh (Mai) .
