In his absence the 250cc Pro Class continued to De full of tight. exciting racing. John Silva (Hon) jumped into the lead the first " m o to with F.G. Performancesponsored Dave Coyle second ' and Redlands/Spectro's Marty Miller third. By the second lap Miller had disposed of Coyle and went after Silva . While Miller was looking for a way around Silva , John Greenway · was making Some moves of his own and by the fourth lap had put himself behind Miller in third. Miller slipped by Silva to take over the lead. Silva now had the job of trying to pick Miller's weak , spot but was unable to do it and settled for second. . ei The second' moto saw Silva get 5 anothe: fan~astic start and take the lead WIth Miller and. It went right down to the wire and was so close for the second spot that the officials declared it a , (le a d heat between Silva and Greenwa y and split the money between them equally. . Danny Burtt continues to be king of die mountain in the l25cc Pros. Burtt •went to the front off the line in the first " moto and never looked back. Harden unscrambles Scramblers' Scot Harde~'won the Silver City Scremblers' MRAN Pioche GP. 'Ploche GP ~~e By Skip Johnson PIOCHE, NV, SEPT.!l Scot Harden overcame mechanical troubles to take the overall win at the fourth annual Pioche Grand Prix held Labor Day. weekend. Harden, riding a very crisp !l90 Husky, was followed by Husqvarna teammate Jack Johnson, also aboard a !l90, and Team KTM rider Kevin Davis . This year's GP was the motorcycle segment of Pioche's "Ole Nevada Days" Labor Day's celebration. A few years ago, the Las Vegas based Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada sanctioned the Silver City Scramblers Motorcycle Grand Prix " racin g through town" excitement, an~ this year's evellt provided plenty of excitement. Sunday's program fired up early as the minicycle segment headed for the smoke at 7 a.m. The "l I vmile course was quickly dominated by the larger 100cc machines. Darrel Folks , a lOOcc Expert aboard a Sportsman Cycleprepared Suzuki RM100 , took the lead late in the first lap and was quickly followed by Amateur Billy Hill, also aboard an RMIOO. prepped by Vegas Cycle Center. Hill rode a ve ry aggressive race, and really pulled up on Folks in the last few miles of their th ird and final lap. The finish was so close . the pair decided to go another lap just to see who really was what! The Folks /Hill duo was followed by Suzuki-mounted Novice Mike Morris and John Almerg (Suz), second Novice. Fifth overall and first 80cc Expert was the day's biggest surprise, as all of the hot dog .RM and YZ Exoerts were outdone by cour.a~us • ( II : I h.~ l , t hl. C . c r.rt Bozarth, riding pie plate EXpert m his first race ever aboard a painfully l iJ . 1 . ,1 ;, I\:' J stock Honda XR-75 . The banner dropped for the big boyS at 10 a .m, sharp. Scot Harden immediately began scooting away from the rest of tile Experts, followed closely by Johnson and Davis . Soon to follow were tile Amateur and Novice groups, ready to chase their way around a 25-mile loop four times. No problem. No problem until a number of the Amateur and Novice riders decided to follow tile minicycle tracks instead of the course markings and found themselves back in the pits a half hour early! One fellow liked the mini course so much he went around twice and he stopped each lap to thank a. cb~b, member for making such a bitchin course. He stopped thanking when he found out he rode an extra 22 miles for nothing. Fred Hansen, Jr., current 250cc number one, was sorting out his first ride on a new Husky !l90 and a number of, 250 Expert hopefuls incl ud ing Jeff Harper (H o n ) , "Bultaco" Bob Gabriel, Mike Maze (Hus) , Rod Alstrom (Yam) and a trailing Marc Knudsen (KTM), cu~rent 250cc points leader, were trymg to catch Davis. Punching and sliding his way to fifth overall on lap one was Suzuki RM125-mounted Chris Howard. Lap • two's order was . slightly different as first to come around was Johnson witil Davis T~ally th~atening. Next came Harden, bouncing back like. a new racqt;tetball after losing his ~ham and making temporary repairs m the desert. Hansen was getting the ' feel of his new big bore and had settled into a comfortable fourth and Howard was still buzzing his way around in fIfth.-. !:Info 8ni ~clJ t:t :~1J .1.~ brl1lto l .1. By lap three Harden was long gone, with Johnson following, along with Davis. Hansen and Howard. The balance of the pack had become very hard to sort out after tile minicycle trail mixup . The .Scramblers decided tha t those who followed tile wrong trail were responsible and they would just have to make that time up. . Taking the checkered on lap four for the second year in a row was Harden, followed by Johnson. Third overall, first 250cc was a very content Kevin Davis, followed by Hansen, nursing a very sore looking shoulder. Fifth was Howard. Next were Casey Folks (!l90 Hus), Maze and Knudsen. Maze was at first disqualified for riding across a paved' road crossing. but was later re-instated in the results after it was learned that a club member had waved riders across the road. The Scramblers will have to spend some time unscrambling tile rest of the finishers, but nevertheless, tile race was deemed a success. There were no complaints 'a bou t the course (other than the mini course marking, and I am sure that won't happen again!) , the weather was perfect, and the riders kept it conservative in town. It was great. Results OVERAll: 1. Scott _ (HUll 1It Open Ex; 2. Jack .lohr-.lHUIl2nd Open Ex;3. Kevin Davia(!CTMI lit 250 Ex; 4. Fred ~. Jr . lHuol 3rd Open Ex; 5 Chrio_ lSuzl 1.. 125 Ex;8.
