unsettling him. With two laps to go
and less than one-quarter bikelength
between them, Sturgeon made his
move, grabbed a handful of gears and
propelled himself into the lead.
Coming down to the finish line ,
Sturgeon crossed in the lead, Atkins
was solid in secomi and a neck and
neck duel for third went down between
Senecal and Hampton with Senecal
winning by a hair.
The second time around was a
rematch
between
Atkins
and
Sturgeon. With Atkins out in front,
Sturgeon was cranking it on and going
for it . Halfway through the race
Sturgeon made his move into the lead
and commenced to set up a 17-second
lead by the end of the race: Atkins
maintained second as once more ,
Hampton and Senecal dueled for third
wit~ Hampton winning out.

HutchIngs,
Sturgeon fly at
Cycle Haven MX
By Lee Taylor
LONG BEACH, CA, SEPT. 24
The, teinperature was unusually
high for Cycle Haven, but eager
racers and an enthusiastic crowd
made the heat bearable.
A large turnout of the Old Timer's
Association proved a prime example,
pushing their bikes back to the pits all
with smiles on their faces. Larry
Langley, who usually rides enduros,
was put in the Old.Timer) Association
race due to the lad of a separate
Veteran's class. "Please try to get up a .
Veteran's class!" he begged as he
bopped his way around the course,
trying to make his way through a solid
pack of red jerseys,
,
Ken Hutchings (Suz) broke records
for the 125cc Beginners. Not only did
he rack up a pair of wins by moving
out in front, he continued to separate
himself from his nearest competitor
with a 25-second lead. Needless to say
his .days as a Beginner are numbered
and he will soon be moved up to
Junior.
Throughout
the ' first
moto
Hutchings left a snarling pack of
traffic behind him. Fighting tooth and
nail ; over every inch of the track for
second were John Myers, Steve
Thetford and Bill Beatty, mounted on
a Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha
respectively. These three continued to
do battle down to the end of the moto,
protecting their respective positions as
they watched Hutchings disappear
into the horizon.
The second time around Hutchings
once more slipped away from them as
the pack charged into the first tum
three abreast. Thetford flew into
second and found Beatty, Earl
Leonard and Tim Squires on his back. .
As before, Hutchings was just plain
walIr.ing away with the race and once
more had a 25-second lead over the
pack. Coming on home for the
checkered flag Hutchings took home
top honors for the day, Thetford took
second overall and .third overall went
to Beatty.
Kirk Sturgeon (Hon) returned to
Cycle Haven for another chance at the
Pro win. Although he found his friend
and competitor Jason Yodogawa
sidelined with a shoulder injury,
Sturgeon still found plenty of action
'and some heavy competition enroute
to the winner's circle.
The first time off the line , Rick
Atkins (Suz) grabbed the holeshot, '
leaving behind a tight battle for
second between Glen Senecal,
, Stu rgeo n and Richard Hampton.
Hampton was running third and had
Sturgeon breathing down his jersey.
Senecal went down with style and
,.grace, sliding completely around on a
turn and setting himself back in
fourth. Sturgeon was charging, up to
second and going after Atkins. Atkins
. was secure with a beautiful lead. but I
found Sturgeon .c1osing in and
