TIme trials Brow started his winning show early by selling fast time around the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds oval with a 38.45-second time on his Klotz /Wiseco. Harley -Davidson . Skip Aksland (38.60) was second fast est in his first dirt track appearance since he was injured in th e Santa Fe TT in June . Gary SCOll was third in qualifying. and the last polesitter in the heats was Alex Jorgensen aboard the aging Ron Woods Norton . Springsteen was ninth fastest. Eklund 12th. Brow, winner here in May, took the lead shortly af ter a crash 6 brought out the red flag on th e fourth lap . After . tussling . for I awhilewent onStevebuild up an. with Morehead Brow to Steve Eklund closed to within one point of leader Jay Springsteen in the Camel Pro point standings. 276 -275 , with one event left, the half mile at Gardena's Ascot Park. Eklund rode the Za nort i Enterprises Harley · Davidson to fifth . while Springsteen had trouble hooking the factory Harley up and finished ninth. Finish ing behind Brow were Findlay, OH , residents Stev e Morehead and Hank Scot t. SCOll and Brow tied for the top number of m ile "It was a harder race ." said Brow of his heat race compared to the National, "Not as tiring, but harder." Brow jumped into the lead with Ted Boody and Springsteen in his wake . Using a high line throught he turns, Springer quickly dispatched of Boody and then got past Brow. Springsteen then moved out to what looked to be a comfortable position. Behind Brow, there was a bailie over third between Boody and veteran Chuck Palmgren on the Dan Gurney H ·D that was later joined by Hank SCOll . Palmgren and Boody continued their fight : at one point it swept Palmgren past Brow. Garth stayed passed less than a ' lap though. and started pouring on the coals to catch Springsteen. It happened on the last lap , with Brow leading the National Champ and Palmgren across the line. Boody and Scott headed for the semi. Rookie Ricky Graham led the second semi off the line, but glory was short-lived when the red flag came OUI. Texan Mike Kidd led the restart with Skip Aksland and Randy Goss . following. u Aksland slipped his PJl /Lectron/ D.A.R.T. Dev. XR past Kidd in turn one of the next lap . but Kidd didn't accept the idea and led the next two laps . Skipper went by Kidd again , this time in the second turn, and this time for good . Aksland went on to win th e heat over Kidd and Goss . Rookies Joe Wilson and Jackie Mitchell finished fourth and fifth . The third ' heat produced some of the best racing of the day. Gary Scott (KK Motorcycle Supply H -D) led with Bill Schaeffer (Bel -Rav /Schaffer's H -D XR) in second. By the end of lap one, Steve Morehead had the lead on his Doug Sehl-tuned KK Supply/K&K Insurance Harley. By mile three, Terry Poovey and rookie Lance Jones had made it a five-rider battle. Morehead led the first four laps before he suddenly dropped to third behind Schaeffer and Jones , and ahead of Scott and Poovey. The rookie took the point position on the next lap as Schaeffer dropped to fourth . Poovey started lighting the fuse on his Bel -Ray/Tex Peel H ·D. Fifth on the seventh lap of the 1O· lap heat , he was third on the eighth lap after dispatching Schaeffer a nd SCOll. Poovey made his move a round Morehead as they hit t he white flag and then passed Jones on the last lap to come up with the win. Jones and Morehead took the other transfer positions. • The final heat saw Corky Keener get the holeshot, with Steve Eklund moving from fourth to second in turn
