Vic tory -bound Everts soon found a way around Sun. ("I was tired on the first la p!" Sun said later, weak from his illness.) Once in second , Everts quickly closed on Rahier. then moved into the lead before the moto was 10 minutes along . Tommy Croft , after starting slowly. dropped even further back when he and Bengt Ab erg tangled . " A be rg got his foot caught in m y rear wheel - bent the shock! " Croft said later as mechanic Fr ed Bauch changed th e suspension unit between motos, Aberg was forced out of the moto , and was unable to contest round two. Croft fini shed 28th . Meanwhile, the top four spots Evens, Hudson . DeCosrer and Hannah - pulled away. Everts held on to win , but in the final few laps . DeCoster and Hannah reeled in H udson . They followed Everts across the line 2·3 , leaving Hudson a solid fourth . Ro unding out the top 10 were Sweden's Haka n Ca rlqv is t , Czechoslovakia 's Jaroslav Falta , Swede Torlief Hansen , Gaston R a hi er , J a a k Van Ve lthoven and Engla nd's Ro b Hooper. Chuck Sun had faded to 13th place. Belgiu m he ld a l4 ·point adva ntage, 11·25 , over England after one moto . Sweden fo llowed with 32, and the U .S . Team held fourt h, seven points back, wit h 39 . The Czechs were fifth with 43 points. _ Ra hier once again led the eight teams into turn one at the start of the second rnoto, but he drifted wide. Bo b Hannah squared the tum and m oved into the lea d . The H u r rica n e's turn up front lasted less than one lap , however , when he fell. "I had it leaned over and caught my handlebar on something ," he said. As they completed lap two , Team Sweden slipped )n a one· two punch as Hakan Carlqvist and Torlief H a nsen took command . R a hier was running third under hea vy pressure fr om teammate Everts. Carlqvist and Hansen held their positions for the remainder of the race . Everts made his move to third , but t hen dropped to sixth by the time thecheckered flag fell leaving third for Czechoslova kia's j arosla v Falta , The mos t outstanding -ride of the day came fro m Roger DeCoster who started last bu t worked his way u p to eighth place in the star-studded field , Rahier lost thi rd under an 'attack from Fa lta but maintained fourth place. Velky, Everts . Noyce , DeCoster, Hudson and Arne Lodal completed the top 10 . Team U .S . had seen hope early in the moto , but Hannah's problems co nt in ue d' (" I endoed three times" ); Sun started 14th. moved up slightly , then dropped to 15th ; Croft started well , but couldn't make the European Team Honda work; and Staten started around 25th and moved up to 20th , When the best six rnotos were tabulated for each team . the Belgi a ns' clear-cut advantage became obvious.
