East . Bay Honda's Chris Grewer fought off a last-ditch drive from Balwin Cabinets' Curt Wilcox to claim the 250 cc Pro crown . An unfortunate pa ir of accidents in the su p port class comb ined with the Pa cific Ocean da rkness made it necess ary for ZAP MX director Larry. Kleist to cancel the day's final Pro motos. Going into th e day's only 250cc Pro round saw Chris Grewer (Hon) and Curt Wilcox (Hon) tied for the series cla ss lead . Grewer wasted no time in taking over as he jetted his Honda up the long start hill with Joe Headly (Han), Phil Douglas (Hus) and Jeff Jacobson (Hon) pursuing closel y behind . Wilcox was involved in a first turn tangle , but quickly remounted at the tail end of the 20 -rider pack . Also pla ying catch-up was Monterey's Chris Ha ckman on his Gene Hackman prepared Yamaha as both ca m pa igners were storming through th e pack with wild abandon . Up front it was still Chris Grewer in com ma nd as his Steve Grewer-tuned mount never missed a beat. Headly was keeping Grewer honest while a tight tussle was developing for the th ird position as Jacobson, Douglas, W.i1~ A~ers an~ Wilcox were really mlxmg It up . Wilcox made his move at the halfway mark and radically roost ed around Akers' Yamaha , then he quickly disposed of Jacobson and Douglas to gain third. Following ' Grewer were Headly, Wilcox , Jacobson, Akers, and Tom Ross (Hon). -' . . The 125cc Pros saw Wosick riding his maiden race for the Fox team easily taking the day's laurels and 125c~ Professional title. Fred Tunnicliff (Pleuston Suz) and Kent Woods (Action Cycles Suz) started off the day racing as they hit the first corner together. When the pack came out of the backsection it was now Wosick, Tunnicliff, Woods and Kent Classen trailing. Classen plugged in the power to jolt past Woods on the steep downhill, but still wasn't satisfied with ' his third position and roosted his Yamaha around " t he Tunni" on lap five. The lanky Wosick paced himself well , and easily held off Classen. At -'H lO p .m. the days' (nighr'sj) final Open moto was run with Curt Wilcox (Yam), Larry Wosick (Suz) , Neal Snarr (Suz) and San Mateo -Yarna ha's Kipp Classen leading the c h a r ge up the ever- changing Pescadero course. Wosick snatched the top Spot by pass ing Wilcox on the tricky sidewall section while Classen powered his big bore KTM ahead of the Fred Parsons-prepared Suzuki of Neal Snarr to capture third. Maico riders Steve Marvic , Robert Condgon and Dave My then were grouped behind. By the halfway mark Wosick had built up a comfortable 15-second lead over Baldwin rider Curt Wilcox, With darkness shadowing the track, Wosick went on to win with Wilcox, Classen, Snarr. Douglas, Condon. and Mythen trailing. Wosick picked up the ZAP Open title with Kipp Classen gaining second and Shawn McConn placing third overall in the $4000.00 series . In Intermediate and Novice support cIass motes, John Swan captured the Open Intermediate series title with Novice rider Don Jensen gaining enough po ints to place second overall , top Open Novice. Tom Ross really . came on strong as the Honda rider copped the 250cc support group crown with Irv Achziger. Tim Hunter and King Peters placing behind.
