It was a t hrilling contest between the Master (Ma uge r) and his Pupil (Au trey), who h ad lea rned so much under the guidance of Mauger when he was also based at Exeter. Autrey gated second to Mauger, but the New Zealander could not pull away from him . On the back straight on the last lap Au trey mounted his big challenge to take the lead. He tried to go round the canny Mauger on the last bend. They seemed to become locked together, they were that close. Mauger ran fast and wide in to the turn and had the better line all the way round , and won with Autrey still snapping at liiS heels. ~ Still, with five points from two rides Autrey was well up with the leading scorers. But in race 10 Autrey could only finish third to Dave Jessup and [ O le O lsen , but Jessup had to break the track record again, leaving it at 67 seconds even. ~ Autrey won his fourth ride to keep in touch with the leading riders , beating rival Kennett . So it was all down to the last round of rides. Autrey , Lee and Kennett were all on nine points with Ol sen fractionally ahead on 10 po ints. A win was what Autrey ' wanted in his last race to lea ve him with 12 points - and only Olsen coul d get more. But Autrey was beaten for pace by the su rprisi ngly fast Polish rider Rembas and his l l vpoin t total was onl y enough to give him his th ird place chance shot. • Resu lt s . RACE BY RACE: 1.
