Ilett) Chuck Sun is chased by Russia's Vladimir Kavinov 142).IAbove) The Russian team II.-r.) Khudiakov. Korneev. Kavinov and Molseev.IBelow) Heikki Mikkola 1171 pursues the fleeing Hannah. th, S.,rgett hurt found his rear wheel off the ground; the motor stalled and refused to fire when he touched down. Rear wheel skidding, entering the turn too fast , Hannah la id it down and went through the barrier tape sliding all -the way .> to the bottom of the hill . He remounted quickly - only the clutch lever had been broken - and returned to the track in seventh place. :Just as Hannah fell, Hudson found his way around Sun and took over second. In the next few laps , Bruno dropped back as Russia 's Valery Korneev , .Czechoslovakia's Jaroslav Falta and Hannah filled places four through seven behind Mikkola , Hudson and Sun . , In the closing laps, Sun, who was hounded by Korneev , reeled in Hudson. He made his move on the final time around, tak ing second behind a long -gone He ikki r Mikkola. Hudson held th ird ahead of Korneev and Hannah. Roger DeCoster, who started 16th just behind Hudson, finished sixth. Falta, Graham Noyce , Hans Maisch and Gennady Moiseev rounded out the top 10. Unofficially, the U.S. team was tied with Russia for first place after the opening moto, Round two wou ld tell the tale. Hannah, who eventually finished second, and Sun, who wound up eighth, put in relatively incident-free rides . But for the U .S. team , one man short with no room for failure of any kind, ran out of luck "about 10 minutes into the moto, " when Tommy Croft's Fred Bach-tuned Honda blew a front tire. "If it had 'a been the rear one, I could have ridden with ill" Croft stated afterward , "but there's just no way I could ride on this track with a flat front . Maybe we'll put it all together next week." The following weekend features the Trophee des Nations team race in Belgium , a 250cc race as compared to today's 500cc race . The same teams contest both events . Mikkola wasted no time in blasting up from his fifth-place starting slot to begin pushing Hannah for the lead only one lap into the second moto , On the third time around, he passed to take the lead. Again, he was to hold it to the end . Hannah held second , virtually unchallenged until the final lap when DeCoster unleashed one of his famous late charges and nearly caught the "Hurricane" at the flag , From fourth place on back, it was a hard fought free-for-all among Germany's Fritz Kobele and Herbert Schmitz, England's Graham Noyce and Neil Hudson, America's Chuck Sun, Russia 's Vladimir Kavinov and France's Jean-Jacques Bruno, That's how they finished. "It was definitely a faster pace!" Chuck Sun reported when it was over . "There were only 13 seconds between Hannah (second place) . and mel (eighth place)." Rex Staten has been selected to take Burgett's place on the Trophee des Nations. Staten, who finished second in the 500cc AMA /Mr. PiBB National MX Championship Series and rode almost half the season on factory Yamaha equipment. will ride the Bill West -prepped 250cc Yamaha works bike that is over in Europe and was to have been ridden by Burgett. Yamaha Racing Team Manager Ken Clark reported that Staten left for Europe Tuesday, Sept. 5. • Results TEAM scoRes: 1. USSR (71~ 2. Germany (751; 3. Belgium 1801; 4. USA 190); 5.
