for third place. Ba iley's placing marked ·the first Yamaha in a mile National this year. Pole sitter Mike Kidd was quickly forc ed out of the race with mag problems. He ca me back, went out and was then back again to earn a spot in the semi . Jackie Mitchell , aboard the Team Bel-Ray /Diamond Chain /Carl Patrick Racing XR , won the slugfest in heat three. Scott Pearson put his H D West/Circle Bell Enterprises Harley into the lead at the start with Mitchell taking over on lap three. Garth Brow, riding his own Klotz/Wiseco XR in place of a Mert Lawwill -prepped machine which was being readied for San Jose , moved into the fight. Brow grabbed the lead on lap six and the swapping was on. Pearson took the lead and then Mitchell and then Brow . On the final lap it was Brow diving into turn three and just as quickly going out ' when his engine blew. Mitchell took advantage of the situation to drop Pearson to second and take the win. Gary Scott, a good distance back on his KK Motorcycle - Supply XR, inherited third place. The fourth heat proved to be the mind blower of the day with no less than six riders all going for the lead. Terry Poovey , Ted Boody, Joe Wilson , Springsteen, Rick Campbell and Keith Ulicki all congregated in a huge pack banging, bashing and bumping until they- sorted everything out. Poovey held the lead for the first two lapse.where it counted. Boody then took over as Springer dumped Poovey into the four rider rumble behind him. Boody slipped off the groove and Poovey was right back in front . Campbell made his move to third and then to second with two laps to go . Campbell's engine then expired. Boody took his lead to the flag followed closely by Springer as Joe . Wilson slipped momentarily in turn three and Poovey jumped into third . Semis Steve Eklund quickly dispatched ' of Sam Ingram in the first of two semis which would transfer two riders each to the National. Mike Kidd , starting way back in traffic, moved through to challenge for third on lap seven and second on lap eight. By then it was too late to catch Eklund. Phil Darcy put his Andrae's H ·D XR into the lead of semi two , but Joe Wilson soon took it away leaving Darcy to chase Wilson for the next four laps. Keith Ulicki then entered the battle and hounded \yilson right down to the final lap. Wilson led charging out of the final turn, but then quickly raised his hand as mechanical problems cropped up. The, National tickets went to Ulicki and' Darcy. Trophy Race " I missed the National here by just a little bit, I won't do that next week ," said Phil McDonald after winning the Trophy Race. McDonald , on the Team ·Bel ·Ray /K&N Motorcycles / Lectron/C .P.D .1. of Wichita XR, led from start to finish with Ray Legary, Joey Purdue and then Scott Drake filling in the second spot. Drake, with a slow start, made up ground at a gallop to move into second on ta p sev en and th en whittled down McDonald's lead to three bikelengths at th e flag . some minor adjustments before he could run. The versions of the story vary , but when Eklund was told his two minutes to work on the bike were up others were still working and his bike was ready and running moments later . Referee Charley Watson wouldn't let him ride. " I can't believe it ," said Eklund later. "All that work for nothing. Then, when I tried to discuss the matter after the race, I find that they wouldn't take my protest because they said time had run out." Eklund had to go through the pits to scrape up enough cash to be in a posi tion to file . "We put a lot of money and serious effort into our program," said Eklund's sponsor Mario Zanotti in a call from his San Jose, California home. "It is not right that we should be discriminated against. Other riders still working past their time - Mike Kidd for one - who had already used up their time and I have a witness to that. Our worst enemy isn't the Harley-Davidson factory, it's the AMA ." Boody, Pearson, Morehead, Poovey, Springsteen, Schaeffer; Jones and - Keener led the assault into, through and out of turns one-two. Morehead and Springsteen quickly turned the gas on even more and moved Pearson to fourth with some close quarters thread the needle passing. Morehead then powered by Boody as the crowd hit turn three on lap four. Pearson, Poovey and Springer, who had slipped off the groove , swapped positions at will as Hank Scott began his bid for a fourth Mile win . In another battle for position, Jones , Keener, Schaeffer, Ulicki and Darcy were going at it for seventh. Ulicki moved through the pack slowly leaving all behind and was sixth, his finishing position, by.lap 19. By lap 10 Morehead was feeling the pressure of Boody and Springer. However, Boody was having trouble hooking up and was tiring, Springer waited and moved past into second two laps later to hound Morehead and finally take the lead on lap 15 with a pass going into turn one. Springsteen was set for a 10-lap run to the flag with Morehead as his shadow. Boody's third place, however, was not safe. Hank Scott, minus his rear brake since. the first lap, was on Boody's rear wheel and proceeded to slip past on lap 19 to set the top three. Scott Pearson then decided that he wanted to finish fourth and moved Boody down another spot two laps farther on as Ulicki dropped Poovey to seventh. "It's about time I finally put one of these ' Miles together," said Springer after the champagne tasting party. (Bill) Werner really worked hard on this one. We changed the timing, jetting and gearing before the National. It was a gamble, but it sure paid off." " I'm just trying to keep Findlay, Ohio on the map," were Morehead's words when questioned . on his Mile winner's circle appearances. " I guess you can't win them all," said Hank Scott . " Bu t 1 would sure like to and I'm not gonna quit trying. Hey, San Jose is just two weeks away ." • (Abovel Ted Boody lost fourth place to Scott Pearson (belowllate in the race.
