THE BIG BIKES ARE COMING!
,Autreyin
way final
who had fallen in a contro versia l
incide nt in his firs t race.
It was a t hrilling contest between
the Master (Ma uge r) and his Pupil
(Au trey), who h ad lea rned so much
under the guidance of Mauger when
he was also based at Exeter. Autrey
gated second to Mauger, but the New
Zealander could not pull away from
him . On the back straight on the last
lap Au trey mounted his big challenge
to take the lead. He tried to go round
the canny Mauger on the last bend.
They seemed to become locked
together, they were that close. Mauger
ran fast and wide in to the turn and
had the better line all the way round ,
and won with Autrey still snapping at
liiS heels.
~ Still, with five points from two rides
Autrey was well up with the leading
scorers. But in race 10 Autrey could
only finish third to Dave Jessup and
[ O le O lsen , but Jessup had to break the
track record again, leaving it at 67
seconds even.
~ Autrey won his fourth ride to keep
in touch with the leading riders ,
beating rival Kennett . So it was all
down to the last round of rides.
Autrey , Lee and Kennett were all on
nine points with Ol sen fractionally
ahead on 10 po ints.
A win was what Autrey ' wanted in
his last race to lea ve him with 12 points
- and only Olsen coul d get more. But
Autrey was beaten for pace by the
su rprisi ngly fast Polish rider Rembas
and his l l vpoin t total was onl y enough
to give him his th ird place chance
shot.
