As for the Pros, Jason Yodogawa, riding for DMG, had to fight from the start of the first moto down to the wire for his customary win. This is Yodogawa's home turf,'and heknows . every inch ofthis track but Sunday. he found a challenger in Kirk Sturgeon. mounted on a 250cc Honda. with an , impressive list of wins under his belt. A fairly young ' Pro who usually rides Indian Dunes, Sturgeon startled all the regulars last summer when he won his first Pro race at night , against some formidable foes. Throughout th e first rnoto Yodogawa found Sturgeon glued to his rear fender . Glen Sen ecal led the class off the line and fought to hold onto his lead until Yodogawa and Sturgeon took over. A bailie th en went down between Senecal and Donald Mcl ver for third with McIver fin ally taking it . . Several times it appeared th at Sturgeon would take the lead . On one pa rt icul a r turn th at is po sit ivel y. wicked - an uphill . off-camber to th e left - Yodogawa rod e th e edge of the berm, shooting back on to. the middle of the track as Sturgeon hugged the tight inside line . Coming through they were wheel -clashing and totally WFO. Yodogawa inched on by and continued his lead to the end. with Stu rgeon never more than a half a bike behind. The second time off the line, Senecal once more grabbed the holeshot with Yodogawa and Sturgeon dueling wheel-to-wheel for second. Solid in fourth was Ty Cline, holding off four other riders. packed in tight and out for a crack at the lead . Senecal did a beautiful job of holding Yodogawa off but finally was outpowered and had to settle into third behind Sturgeon. Once more the dynamic duo were at it. Neck and neck over the whole track . Coming down towards the end, Yodogawa opened some space for himself and held firm for the overall win . Sturgeon came on home in second and Senecal came through for a thi rd overall. Randy Sciarra (Hon) scooped up a spectacular pair of back-to-back wins in the 125cc Beginners, Division Three. Sciarra held a firm lead throughout the first moto as a heavy duel was shaping up for second between Ken Hutchings (Suz) and Mitch Davis. Throughout the race there was never more than a half bikelength between these two . Michael Tarkington, astride a Kawasaki . was fighting for all he was worth. weaving his way in and out of the large field he was now in fourth and going for ' it! Tarkington, who last month .was chosen as the Outstanding 'Spor tsmen Rider and who 's had to work for everything he's gotten. bike included; had half the bleachers cheering him on . Coming in for the close of the moto, Davis made his move and tooK over second, holding Hutchings to third. Sciarra was out in front and just breezed right on across the line . The second time around Larry Early took charge with Sciarra in hot pursuit. With Glen Malquist fighting off Tarkington for third , it : was a battle of pa irs down throughout the pa ck. Davis was doing a superb job of threading his way up through the pack as Sciarra look over the lead, fighting to pull away from Earl y. When the winning ch eckered flag brought them hom e Sciarra eme rged th e victor , Tarkington took second overall and third overall went to Davis. Riding a Husqvarna 390 . ~ell. known ' enduro squid Larry Langley ended the day with a first in the Open , Juniors. He end..d the first moto in the lead. holding Marc Johnson on a Suzuki to second and Chris Crowell, also Husqvarna-mounted, to third. The second time around Crowell moved on out in front , taking Langley's lead away. and forcing Johnson to a third. Results MINI BEGDIYI: 1. Johnny SIaveno lVaml 2. Bobby ; langley; 3. AUG . 27 It was another hot day in Riverside County but that didn't stop a healthycrowd of motocrossers from ' ruing in to DeAnza Cycle Park for a full day of racing and fun. The heat didn't even seem to bother Gary Scheidler (Yam) on his way to a 125cc Expert victory. He did have one problem. however, in the form of Yamaha of Indio's Craig Gormley (Yam). When they swarmed into the first turn of the first moto, it was Gormley in control. Within only a few laps , the kid from Indio had established an incredible lead on Andy Orescanin and Scheidler . On lap three, Ken Odra (Yam ) passed both Orescanin and Scheidler for second place. One lap later. Sche idler moved back int o third by passing Orescanin. Scheidler then continued his upward march by repassing Odra, but by that time, Gormley was out of sight. J ust
