The track took its toll on competitors throughout the day, as many dropped with mechani'1 id T ca I f at ures or ri er error. wo who suffered greatly from ,the 16 conditions 'were last week's 125 and 250cc Pro winners, Moto-X Fox 's . Donnie Cantaloupi and DG Performance's Steve 'Ba u e r . Cantaloupi came from behind in the first 125cc Pro moto to win, but in the second rnoto blew a rod while running fifth . - Bauer had a miserable day altogether as he got caught in the first 250cc Pro qualifier gate malfunction and was centerpunched, bending th e swingarm on his CR250R, then took second in the qualifier, but blew a mai.n seal in the proc~, switche~ engtnes between. the quahfier and hIS first moto, then In that race suffered a flat rea r tire. Three r iders who eluded the problems were Mike Goodrich, the surprise 125cc Pro overall victor from Phoenix, J im Gibson , who brought his Bassett Racing Products YZ250E to decisive moto victories in the 250cc class, and last week's 500cc Pro dom inator Scott Gillman. Gillman outrode Can-Am factory star Rich . Eierstedt and factory Kawasaki ace Jammin' Jimmy Weinert for his double moto victory on his Murphy's Research and Service Yamaha . First to hit the cou rse wer e the 125cc Pros, and DG's Ga ry Dirks rounded the first comer ahead of FMF/Trac Pro's Cliff Lett and Chappy Blose. Cantaloupi was stranded back in 12th. but on the move. By the second lap Donnie picked his way into seventh. .Blose came to a stop under a tree before completing lap two , th en reentered at the back of the pack. This left Dirks and Lett alone for a lap, but Cantaloupi was up on Johnny O 'Mara's tail and the AI Baker rider wasn 't in the mood for being passed. It took .Ca n talou pi until the fifth circuit before sliding around O 'Mara, then he picked off a rider a lap until the halfway mark, when he reached Lett and Dirks. These three pulled away with Dirks still holding fast. Then. Dirks began to tire and Lett slipped by for the lead in the back section. Cantaloupi followed suit for second, then set up Lett for a stab at the lead. That chance came on lap 14 , and Donnie took futl . advantage of it. He went into the lead and never lost it. Mike Goodrich worked from ninth off th e line to th ird at the finish , getting Dirks in the final laps. Mike Brown, Mike T ripes and O 'Mara followed . In his firs t crack at a Pro ride, Scott Burnworth holeshot the second moto, but Chappy Blose took over on the first lap. Goodrich and DMG's Pat "Hotd og" Hubbs trailed , but both put Burnworth behind the next time around. Blose again pulled off, like the first moto, and Goodrich found himself in the lead. . • First mota winner Cantaloupi was charging up from the rear as was Cliff Lett, but Donnie blew his engine while Cliff engaged in a battle with Mike Tripes and Paul Emerson. Tripes' engine soured, then Lett overtook Burnworth for third. • Top position held as Goodrich and Hubbs ran away with the rnoto, Lett picked up third and Emerson held on for fou rth. Scott Gillman became the next to encounter overall victory as he roosted the 500cc Pros. The first moto was a Gillman affair as he holeshot the start
