Making the factory
stars work for a living'
By Jim Gianatsis
"Hey, what do you want to know about me?"
smiled Darrell. "I could tell you about the old
days of racing with Magoo (Danny Chandler).
Racing then was whoever knocked who down
first ... that was fun. "
For 20-year-old Darrell Shultz
though, the old days of .motocrossing 'around northern California and his Orangevale home
were hardly long ago . It was just this
past summer in the 500cc AMA /Mr.
PiBB Motocross Nationals that Darrell
evolved from a local hotshoe to one of
the . quickest riders in America. In a
matter of weeks he had emerged from
a relative unknown outside his loca l
area to become Maico's top factory
entry in the International class of the
1978 Trans-AMA Series .
"Last year I ~as winning everything
in California' and beating the National
riders when they showed up at the
local races. I thought I could do the
same when I first came out on the
circuit, but those guys have been at it a

I first thought it would be."
Darrell
didn't

back .. . waiting to beat the factory
stars at their own game. He wanted to
be out on the circuit and winning as
soon as he could.
"I've been racing four years now. It
took me six months to tum Expert.
