Heading towards the rollers through
chops was quite a rid e, but once there
the fun began . Beisner regained third
from M. Lee and C. Duncan tried to
make ground on Tolmasoff. .
Com ing down from the hills and
across the valley the first bike could be
seen . Kelly came into the pits after
blazing the fi rst 50 miles in 5 1
minutes. After a lengthy pit stop Kelly
was off. S. Du nca n was still a firm
second as he ent ered the half-fast pits
with Sod buster Tim Nething com ing
in a minute later. Besiner held off Mr.
Lee and didn't stop for ga s. Tolmasoff
and C. Duncan were through next ,
both trying to cat ch Nething. who was
long . gone running first Amateur.
Mulconery charged in next with Mike
Col e (250 KTM ) pass ing Bi ll
Vanderbyl (250 Cycle Products KTM)
less th an a m ile from th e pits . Gr eg
Johnston retired at the end of the first
loop with a flat. Larry Upp (250 Yam)
was leading Mike DYOll (400 Yam ) in
the Sen ior class and Scot At chison (1 75
Yam ) was running first L bike. Novice
J im Tarlcy (400 Yam) did some
outst anding du st cutting as he sta rted
five minutes behind th e Amateu rs a nd
Exp erts a nd was running 17th overall.
Ken Hansing (570 Suz ) was th e early
leader but was now in second ahead of
Paul Vanderb yl (250 KPWHu s),
Da vid Riley (400 Yam) an d Q. Dyott
(175 Yam) was leading Kevin Case'
(125 Yam ). Bo b SCOll was trying to
hold off the cha rge of Lenny Hancock
(400 Yam) in th e Jun ior class.
The leaders were still running
smoot hly until NethinK's brake cable
go t caught around hi s fork tube a nd
had to stop. Beisner motored past
Nething and M. Lee had come within
striking distance by the time he got
underway. Mulconery was berserking
it on the second loop and passed C.
Du ncan and Tolmasoff. Also riding
hard on the second la p was Grant
Colb ert (250 Yam) . Colbert was
running back a ways at the start , but
was now a top 10 threat .
For m ost of the second loop M. Lee
and Nething had been going at it but at
the road crossing just be fore the
sa nd wash M. Lee made his move ,
passi ng Nething on his front whee l. At
the end of the sandwash S. Du nca n
seized his bike and lost 10 m inutes '
getting it unstuck . Mike Martin had
moved into the top 10 by passing B.
Vanderbyl.
Once in the rollers for the final tim e
Kelly got off and bent his ba rs but t ha t
was it. Tom continued on to victo ry
with Beisner surprising everyone by
bringing his Valerian cycle in a t
second overall. M. Lee kept the
you ngsters honest by fin ishing third,
with Nerhing and Mulconery running
' relatively close at the flag. Tolmasoff
and C. Duncan cooked across for six
and seventh with Martin an d B.
Vanderbyl closing in, but not in time.
Cobert fina lly finished a well deserved
top 10 he 'd been look ing for a ll da y.

finished thei r first Amateur rides in
the top 10 and deserve .t o be
recognized. .
Tarply ran away and hid from theNovices by fi nishing 12th ove rall
ahead of Sen ior Up p and Dyott. Steve
Dovies (125 Yam) took the sm a llbore
win after Atchison had trouble. T om
Hokam a (175 Yam) picked up nu m ber
two.
Ken Hansing hung in there for
second Novice with Bria n Zier (250)
picking up third after overtaking R iley
and P. Vanderbyl.
Richa rd Hughes (250 Yam) won his
first ride as an Amateur with newly
acquired Senior rider Ed Waldheim
(400 IT ) finishing second after a th ree month layoff.
Lenny Hancock overtook Bob Scott
to take the Junior class win in the
Novice division .
Doug Behnke (250 Yam) took the
overall Beginner win over lightweight
Mike Rot h a nd Crick Evans (250
Yam). Lowell Milton (400 Yam) took
first Senior and finished in the top 10
comfortably over Max Marker (400
Yam ). First J was Paul Zigler on his
175. Ken Ha nsing ( 125 Yam) took over
the Women's Division lead and victory
after Marge Reeser (175 Yam) stop ped
to help an inju red rider on th e first
loo p. T om my Matthews ( 125 Yam )
ran a close second and complet ed th e
entire 60 m iles with little trouble.
Ga ry Curtis (80 Suz) was top Mini
with Mike Heth (80 Yam ) a nd Barry
Cra wford (80 Yam) providing som e
hot competition.
