We will be at Laguna Seca for the F750 World Championship race along with the only 250cc Seeley in the United States. Both will be ridden by Greg Andrus, AFM 1974 and 1975 750cc GP Champion. Subscription Heisser led though Bumworth won In the coverage of the NMA Grand National Championships (Cycle News issue #33), the article says, "In the runoff, (Scott) Burnworth plainly let the others know that he meant business as he dominated the entire moto." Not ' so . Team DG rider Chris Heisser dominated the moto from start to finish. Burnworth, however, did win overall because NMA rules say that points carry over from riders' regular classes and.Burnworth, with his second in the run-off, had less points. Heisser won the run-off despite riding with a sprained wrist. It was also both riders' last minicycle race. Congratulations to both. One year , second class mail. MIKE DAVIS Norco, CA Mike Bast fan . A lot of people boo Mike Bast and my family and I cannot understand why. He has proved himself to be the - greatest for some time. First Division is not the same without him. Will pray for a speedy recovery. BOBBI HUNTER Fontana, CA Starr's M1C demise 'premature' In reference to paragraph on Peter Starr in the August 9th issue, your reports of the demise of Mr. Starr's association with motorcycling may not be exaggerated but certainly are premature: You neglected to mention that Yamaha is a sponsor of the August 26th broadcasts. GENE CAMERON Account Supervisor, Chiat/Day Inc. , Advertising Los Angeles, CA AMA supporter ON THE FRONT PAGE: This kind of riding earned American Kenny Roberts the 500cc Road Race World Championship title for 1978. Photo by Francois Beau 4 I certainly agree with Jim Wells (Aug. 23 issue, "Voices") regaiding all motorcyclists belonging to a "central" organization and have always felt the Am erican Motorcyclist Asso ciation would be th e logical choice. It is tim e all mo torcyclists joined together in on e grou p for the common cause. I get so tired of hea rin g "what has the AMA done for me" (especially from non-members). What is really important is that the AMA has not taken away our right to ride motorcycles. regardless of how we might elect to ride. In fact they work very hard in all areas of motorcycling for all motorcyclists to keep US riding "our way:' It is really very simple: If you ride a motorcycle and want to continue to do so. join'and support the AMA or put a "for sale" sign on your bike and sell it while you can still find a buyer. Granted, we all can't agree with everything the AMA does alI the time but we must all, as motorcyclists, agree on one thing, and that is that we want to continue to ride our motorcycle without the federal, state and city governments calIing all the shots. We must also be able to make a show of force when necessary. I would also like to add that I feel Cycle News does an excellent job of keeping motorcyclists informed of what is happening. I can't think of a better team for communications for and between motorcyclists than Cycle News and the AMA . The best investment any motorcyclist could make today is to join the AMA , the AMA Legislative Support Group and subscribe to Cycle News. FLOYD JORGENSON Visalia, CA Chicken Ranch racer ink I don't know what to say about your coverage of the AMA /Camel Pro National Road Race at Sears Point. Your reponers either were not there or deaf. I refer to the statement that all the ' racers were aboard 750cc Yamaha's. I feel that your newspaper owes us .a little bit of ink for that one, for if they could not see our 750cc Honda, they sure could hear it. I think that you would agree that our 750cc four-stroke four-cylinder GP racer does not sound much like a TZ750 Yamaha. I think in this day and time when everyone but us at the Ch icken Ranch Racing T eam . all march to the same drum that we deserve som e merion , Wh en you think a bout $13.00 0 a nd over 1,000 ho urs of hard wor k t hat has gone into thi s project we could at least A great big thank-you to all of the friends from whom I received cards. letters, phone calls, frogs, Koala bears. flowers, insane anwork and visits. Your caring made my stay in the hospital a little bit more tolerable. Now that the R&D work on me is over and I am getting a few hours on my engine, it shouldn't be too long before I'm "race ready" again. I really have missed being with all of you on Sundays and am anxious for the time when I get sprung from being housebound and get back to where the action is. Again, thanks for caring about me and a special thank you to Mark Kariya for keeping it all together while I'm away. PATrI FIRTH-TROTrER Oceanside, CA Free trophies In reference to Gary Arnold's need for reinforcement: A wise man once said, "If you really love the game, you tum off the scoreboard." He can have all myoid trophies . . . JIM SEDLACEK Boulder Creek, CA BLM proposes ORV regs- again By Philip C. Briggs _ For the third time in four years the Bureau of Land Management is proposing regulations to control the use of off-road vehicles on public lands. Their first pass was set aside by a U.S. District Coun as not being in accord with Nixon's Executive Order 11644 . The second version was floated in 1976, and the current proposal incorporates some of the comments made at that time - but not many. Why then, should you bother to comment again? There are two reasons. First, although .we still may lose the fight if we continue to voice our opinions. it's certain we'll lose if we don't. Second, and most important in this case, you didn't comment last time. We sat on our collective thumbs. There were only 1300 comments rece ived last time. nationwide. and 830 of those wer e harangues about EO I I 644 sent to th e President. ' Not p arti cul a rl y use fu l.
