With thousands of spectators on hand and over SOO riders to do the racing chores, it was another grandiose success for both District S6 and the charities, and while Rick Graham did not win the third straight 650cc Expert race and the coveted Perpetual trophy, he still has a shot at it. Rod Spencer added his name to the long list of former winners by leading all laps of the super main event with Matt Roho taking the undisputed second in front of Graham, John Tavis , and Oregon's Pete Simonsen just in front of Eric Weisler. The wild and wooly main events were over in record time, due to starting earlier, which caused some problems in not everyone being allowed to signup, but with the gates opening at 6a.m.. if you were late, you were out. The track was in exceptional condition, the best in years, the event ran nearly smooth as silk with the heats being over just in time for opening ceremonies and a good day of activities for all . Expert -rated Minibikes were once aga in invited and Doug Chandler continued to astound and dominate all at once. The 12·year-old wonder won both die 80cc and 100cc Expert mains with little brother Kurt- taking a second in the 80cc for extra family joy and right after that, they all packed up and left for New York and National Amateur Championships along with some eight other families, also to contest the Nationals. Danny Moore, the former Mini-kid, took the 125cc Novice win from Gary Vincelet and Mike Arthur in fine style riding the very fast Cal Cycle Supply 100cc Yamaha in a field of 125's. Bob Silva wasn 't listed as a main event entry, but won the class easily over Joel Green while Bill Wainscot made the kids and grandparents happy about the combined 200cc Novice Junior win on his Bultaco. Joey Knight and his Jorgy Can-Am were the boss on the 250cc Novice run with Greg Brewer taking second on a YZ overJerry Smith. Matt Pemberton took the first of a double win home in the 250cc Junior class, beating Freddie Crabaugh and Kirk Brewer, while Jeff Nichols recovered from an early good start / bad scene to take fourth . Lots of points were up for grabs in the 250cc Expert main and the top two riders were both out to get the most whilst Kenny Netto, just back from the Marines, was out to do his thing on the Yamaha of Salinas special. Netto did the drag race number into the first .comer along with Dan Castleliano and Denny Spence, and it was hors de combat from that point. Netto and Castlehano clashed all the way through while Spence hung in for third over Steve Harvey on the KR Racing Yamaha from Cal Cycle Supply and Benny King. Castlehano took over first just before the halfway point and appeared to have the Fremont Yamaha machine ready for the checkered until Netto turned the wick back up and repassed in the tricky first tum. Going down the front straight on the next lap, Castlehano WFOed it and held the inside line to regain the lead and the win. Ray Byrne, a veteran of many races here, won the S60cc Novice over Chauncy Gorrill with little trouble after the usual first lap mayhem while Tom San Paolo was an ecstatic S60cc Junior winner over the Salinas Kawasaki of Frank Garcia with flyin' Doug O'Brien in for third. Jim Mahoney and the Cycle Center Honda had the first comer of the S60cc Expert main, but the Yamaha of Tony Adragana had the checkered flag with Matt Crowley in for third over the rest of the Cycle Center Honda team. A good battle amongst old friends was the 500cc Novice with Paul Bearson tripping up from Harley West to win over old timer Gerald Spencer in a race-long battle that never got more than a few feet apart. Matt Pem be rt on became the second double winner of the meet taking the q 500cc Junior over cousin Rocky, despite a real banzai effort from John I Land, who beserked the last lap to take third. Land looked like the winner of old but succumbed to the shakies and slidies in the final laps and nearly lost his cookies in a desperate save over the jump that should have been a certain sky-grounder. John Tavis and Danny Castlehano looked up · for a tremendous 500cc Expert battle after Curt Brooks gave it up after leading a bunch, a much too typical operation for Curt. Jeff Buckner wanted to take his Salinas Yamaha TT 500 over first with Matt Carothers looking like the old winner, but it was just too tight between Tavis and Castlehano with JT winning and looking to grab the biggee in just a few more races. Chuck Patterson rode a very good 1 650cc Novice race, his first , and won over Greg Rondy and veteran Gary Rucker. In the heat Gary's gear box wouldn't gear and brakes were not braking and after a bad start, he got it all going in one direction and came from seventh to close in on second at 'J the checkered. Jimmie Carlisle had everything his way in the Open Junior despite Russ ( Sosa trying his all and Jim Chisum just not having anything left of the borrowed BSA Gold Star. . The main event for the day, the one'OO most of the race fans came [0 see,' was the 650cc Expert. Rick Graham had come off the Camel Pro tour to attempt the never before done, winning the event three times in a row
