Lindwall, Sims hot at Costa Mesa By Dennis Greene COS TA MESA, CA , AUG. IS It was just thi s week th a t Louis Lindwall got moved back in to First Di vision a fter proving himself as a to p ri der in Second Di v- "Ilr'!; lrlllC::IC!" ision and as it goes so often in a case like this, Louis went all the wa y to victory in the First Division Handicap 'Main event. Ea rlier in th e night , Steve Columbo 'was excl u ded wh en he was charged ' wit h fou l and dangerous riding. He cut in front of Dennis Sigalos as they "cam e onto th e front stra igh taway and ~ ca rried him into the wall . Everyone ) from the promoter , referee and fa ns booed the ac t , then ch eered when it was a nn ou nced th a t he was excluded. T h e boos came back when Steve lined up for the Handicap Main, where he did finish second to Lindwall. All the riders and fa ns are really gelling tired of all the inju ries. T his year the femur (the thigh bone) see ms to be the " in" thin g to break. The bad p art about that is tha t it takes about a year before you can ride again. T his year we have lost Mike Muntean, Dubb Ferrell, Mike LelIa a nd now MarkJackson . All b ro ken femurs a nd all because someone carried the m to the crash wall . s O n a happier no te, Danny Co llins , beca use of a ll his wins in Division o T h ree, got his first shot in the Second Division . Although the butterflies were there , h e ea sily won t he m ain event aga inst top rid ers of the class . Roundin g out a rough night and even a rougher week of speedway was Gene Woods for th e O range County T ax and Financial Service. Gene beat his teammate Dave Sims in a Match race then went on to ca p tu re th e Scratch Main event. All the Scratch events take on a new im port an ce now with the first round of th e Coors Cup Series qualifying starting this week . Round one is at Ventura Aug. 22 ; round two at San Bernardino Aug . 2 3 . Then in September the third and fourth rou nds will be hel d at Ascot and Costa Mesa , Thursday the 14th and the final chance to ea rn a ride in the U. S.
