this dream could J By Philip C. Briggs A s you pull into the campground at the trail head you can 't help but smile. Been planning this trip for over a year and it 'sfinally - PUBLIC AUCTION come true: The Bert Cole Trail about to start. To ok a lot ofarranging to get everything worked out , but judging by th e scenery here, it will be well worth it. There's two oth er families with you , 'and more riders than trailb ikes so everyone will have to trade around but th ey'll all get to ride three or four days, and get stu ck with advancing th e trucks for a day or so. But we'd better get organized and get moving. It 's close to 40 miles to the first night's stop, and there 's a couple of lakes to fish along th e way. Not to mention th e need to stop every so often to take som e pictures of the incredible scenery. Did you ever dream ' of a trip like that, a two-three-four day trail ride, with packs and sleeping bags, through beautiful mountain country, along trails made and reserved just for bikes ? Well , keep on dreaming , cause you can' t yet. But it may not be too many mo re years till your dreams come, true. The Nor thwest Mo torcycle Association , headquarter ed in t he State of Washington , has that sam e dream , and is activel y working to bring it int o . rality. They've got th e bucks, but need to convince th e land managers of the needs . That's where you can help. Let me explain . The trail woul d be located in western Washington , crossing over th e Cascades , fr om Ahtahnum near Yakima on the east , to Greenwater on the west. The Cascades are a beau tiful mountain range , and contain among other notable peaks, Mount Rainier. The trail would cross the back of th e mountains a few miles north of Mount Ra inie r National Park, offering the . rider fantastic views of the peak itself. The trail would be at least 200 miles long , maybe more, depending upon final route selection. Campgrounds , would be located at each trail head, and near the midpoint , to provide a pleasant place to sta rt a ride , and as . well as a place to wait for riders to come ou t of the hills . The riders themselves would sta y in trail camps spaced ou t at interva ls of 35 to 45 miles. Trail camps would have tables, fire ri ngs, p rivies , and large Adironda ck shelters , with ston e fireplaces. The trail is envisioned as providing an opportunity for bike -packing and . long distance trail travel for the novice as well as the expe rienced ,rider . Not a race course for those of you who could run the distance in a da y, but a recrea ti on al opportunity to 'e njoy na tu r e , to fish , hunt , sightsee, photograph, and just relax in a wild " land environment. .And a public relations tool for the trail rider par excellence. Just imagine the converts we could make, the friends we could educate, with a facili ty that pres ents dirt bikes in the best possible light. Not noisy destroyers of the environment, but a "means to ~et away from it all and see and experience nature the way only a few hardy souls with time to burn do • now. The users of the trail won't be bikers , they 'll be druggists, teachers, doctors , carpenters, lawyers, truck drivers, engineers and Indian chiefs. The silent majority . They'll be sure to join usl Fantastic! (Continued to page 27) August 26, 1978 Inspection 9-5 August 25, 1978 Auction 11 :00 AM August 26 . Everything Must Go! Name your own price!
