AUG. 20 Kenny Roberta. aboard his Goodyear/Lectron-aponaored Vamaha. clinched the &OOcc road racing World Championship via a third place finish In the Aug. 20 final round of the Hries et Nurburgrlng In the West Gennan GP. Victory In the ev.nt went to V1rglnlo ferrari In his tint ride on a works Suzuki with Vamaha works rider Johnny cecotto second. Defending Champion Barry Sheene on his works Suzuki followed Roberts home with Vamaha teamster Takazuml Katayama fifth. Roberta came Into the ev.nt with an .Ight point margin on Sheene and could have claimed the title even with a finish four positions behind his rival. Howev.r. Vesco had not planned to bring the double·KZlooo-engined. turbocharged streamliner back for a second run. but when he learned of the speed. he changed his mind. The wind. however. came up before he could make the second run for an official record. That was Thursday. The Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) wilderness inventory. which has been moving foward completion for almost a year. is now in the closing weeks of public review . The Draft Environmental Imllaet Statement (DEIS) and 20 regional supplements describing the practical and "site-specific" roadless areas that could ultimately be designated wilderness have been ID the public's hands for abf;mt 45 days. The close of the designated comment period is Oct. 1 when all interested groups are expected to have completed their information gathering and submitted their suggested changes. Of critical interest to trail biken is the possibility that traditional riding may be in cl u d ed within those areas id en tifi ed as having wilderness potential. Riden who suspect that their riding area may be included in the RARE 11 review should consult the regional supplement for their state.
