Berry snatched third from Springer on the front straight and just as quickly found hi mself in the turn one haybales. Springsteen , minus brakes, took the final transfer. Junior In vitational Rickey Fiscel figured that winning the Junior Invita tional in front of his hometown fans would be the best way possible to celebrate his 19th birthday. Fiscel, sponsored by Bill's Bultaco of Des Moines and Axte! Sales . turned fast, time among the 20 Juniors vying for a spot in the 12·man event on his Ed Harding-tuned Harley. Rusty Chaddock grabbed the lead at the blink of the green starting light and held it until the field exited tum four a t the end of lap one. Fiscel blew by and set sail for a 10·lap ri de to the winner's circle. Chaddock held off a d eter m ined Marty Heitkamp for second. "I knew I ha d plenty of motor." said Fiscel afterwards. "and th at if I could get past that I coul d win . It was easie r than I thought ." Semis Danny Cartwright . put h is Cartwright Heating & Air-sponsored Harley int o the National in the first semi by holding off Brad Hurst for the win . Hurst hounded Cartwright early after losing the lead to him on the second go around , but lost ground as the laps ticked away . The final spot in the National went to Chubby Armour and his Colora do Shop N Go Markets Harley. Armour grabbed the lead on the complete restart and let Bubba Rush and Sonny Burr es fight it out for second in the second sem i. Trophy Race Joe Wilson onl y led two laps of the Trophy Race, but the y were the ones that counted. The Ca pshaw/ Barn es Wheels/Patrick Ra ci ng /Bo b by ]'ssponsored Harley rider grabbed the lead from Bubba Rush and his Edwards Motor Co .zjemco-sponsored XR on the 10th of 12 laps with a latebraking pass going into tum three and held on for the win . National The abrasiveness of the track allowed little choice on tires for the 14 riders. "The soft compound (Goodyear) won' t last ," said one rider, "and the hard compound doesn't want to stick. I want to finish , so there isn't any choice. " Gary Scott left little doubt that he had his mind set on a win in the National with a rocket-like start that left the rest of the field in his dust. Bood y, Keener, McDonald, Eklund , Springsteen and Kidd quickly hooked up and played in those positions for two laps. Aggressive riding got Keener int o trouble on lap three as he slipped off the groove and found himself sixth. Everyone moved up one spot. Meanwhile, the Scott/Boody battle was shaping up. Boody would put a run on Scott down the straights and overtake him as they entered turns one and three . Scott . however ; wou ld explode out of turns two and four. It . appeared to be a stand off, but the drive of Scott off the comers would eventually prove decisive . Boody took over the lead on lap five and held on until lap 12. He took it back one lap later, gave it up on lap 15 and played shadow to Scott for the remaining laps. Springsteen. after working his way to third on lap five, slipped off the groove and had to start over from sixth. Traffic, in the form of Kidd , Eklund and McDonald, blocked the way. The quartet put oil a helluva show with Springer threading the needle over, under and around in one superb move on lap 17 to set the winner's cir cle. Although the race was extremely close, there was actually little position changing, for as many found out, the groove was deceptive and passing had to be done quickly , carefully and probably with fingers crossed. Some of the best racing of the day was done out of sight of the grandstands as Boody and Scott continually physically battered each other entering tum three in a sort of intimidation ritual. But it was clean, ha rd racing, some of the best seen this season. • Results 1. Gary Scott IH-Ot; 2. Ted Boody (H-O); 3. Joy Spr ingsteen (H-OI; 4. Phil M cDona ld (H-O); 5. Steve Eklund (H-O); 6.
