I certainly hope 99% of the people enjoyed the opportunity to race in the Coliseum the trophies, the cash, and the level of interest of the people who donated their time away from their jobs to produce the event. Further, I would like to thank Cycle News , the manufacturers, the parents and sponsors who supported th e GNC Astrodome, GNC Superdome, GNC Superbowl and the GNC Good Time National. If the political creek doesn't rise ' I believe that Amateurs will have'· a much better place to perfect their abilities to the fullest and be ready should they want to go to professional motocross racing. . Proposition 13 is only the beginning: .pretty soon you'll have to stop dreaming up new ways of wasting our money and start thinking about· so~e good reason to justify your very existence. Granada Hills, CA "'!e GNC Amateur Superbow! reflections I would like to thank Cycle News for their objectivity of journalism in correcting the authorship of a letter I thought obviously erroneous and exaggerated. I might say that it takes a lot of money to put on a race of the magnitude that was staged a t the Los Returned from vacation to catch up on my Cycle News and was d ismayed to find in th e July 12 New Products section your write-up on the Enduro Jug: 1 for one do not want to be racing next te;> anyone who ha s been im bib ing ~nythIng that will impai r h is Judgement and place my hide in more danger than it already is. I I th ink you owe all of us in general, ~nd . your younger more Impre~lOnabl readers in particular, a e retraction that does not occupy some obscure comer of the paper. MARK COOPER Tempe, AZ Just joking, Mark. Sorry you didn 't realize it . . . Editor. Saddleback'~ situation . In reference to John Larson's letter \ m your July 26 Voices column: Yes, 'it's summer at Saddleback Park. We're sorry you 've been having trouble negotiating through the dust. Without being technical, o ur motocross track consists entirely of California black adobe. hard as rock when dry and like multi-purpose grease when wet. Each summer we bring in heavy equipment and deposit enough coarse limestone sand to cover both motocross courses about one foot deep. The sand is then worked in with rippers and hydraulic discs. We also add a biodegradable enzyme to the waterduring track preps each week. We have tried sawdust , wood chips, sh:edded foam rubber, and other SOils, but to no avail. Ideally, a foot or two of DG would be the answer, but costly curbs or bulkheads would nave to be built to contain it, making course change impossible. Saddleback has suffered with tnese difficult soil conditions since our March, 1968 opening. Our crew works extra hard during the hot summer months, and they use over 50,000 . gallons of water each time the .tracks are prepped. Bear with us, John. While we all wa it for winter showers , we at Saddleback want you back. And wnen the gate drops, grab a holeshot and stay in front of the packlJ
