lAbove) America's Bernie Schreiber won his fourth World Trials round. (Below) Vesterinen attacks a section - ~ Yrjo, _ but younger bi od _ Anthoni. By Dave Wilcock )f PINEROLO , ITALY,JULY 16 Bernie Schreiber, the first man to successfully combine trick riding with trials, had the stage to himself again in Sunday's eighth round of .the World Trials Championship in Italy. America' s favori te son left Martin La mp k in , Yrj o Vesterinen and the rest of his ch ampionshi p rivals wondering 12 j ust wha t they m ust do to match the stunning brilliance of this 19-year-old Californian who has now won four of the last five title rounds to go second in the table, 17 points behind Lampkin. Bio n ic Bernie not only scored Bultaco's eighth straight win in the 1978 seriesĀ· bu t he di d it with a club tr ial score, leading a posse of Bul taco riders into the top five places. Losing just eight ma rks on the second of the two 40 km 22-section laps of mostly rock -based nadgery, he came to the finish with a total of 22 leaving Lampkin the impossib le task of riding the second la p clean to win . Anthonio Gorgot - remember the name . lost second place to Lampkin by three marks - but his high placing in the final order was no surprise to followers of the World Championship scene. The powerful six-foot Spaniard , signed by Bultaco from Ossa last yea r, is one of the new generation of title contenders. We'll be hearing more of this talented 19-year-old. W ith Ma nuel Soler and reigning ch ampion Yrjo Vesterinen taking the next two places, it was left to Swed ish cham pion UIt Karlsson , on a fu rt her modified 550 pro to type . to save some grace for Mon tesa, who has made a less than impressive ma rk on the championship this year_ . Karlsson, using a new frame com prising large-bore tu bing and extra long travel forks led a Montesa quartet into the next four places. U.S. Champion Marland Whaley, making his European debut with another of the. big-engined Montesas, might well have figured higher than his eventual eighth place, but his machine was scarcely run in . and refused to rev out cleanly at low speed. The woes that have befallen Malcolm Ra thm ell and the Beamish Suzuki cam p showed no signs of disappearing. The scorching heat that burned down on the beautiful foothills of the Cozie Alps close to the French bo rder sent temperatures soaring into the eighties (Fahrenheit) by nine in the morning - and the Su zu ki's carburation was playing hell.
