No, Mike Bast did not lose the Paul Belisle leads a pack of sliders at Santa Ana Spaedway. Lewis defeats Cody at Santa Ana By Ken Kellogg SANT A ANA. CA,JULY 18 No t on ly did Saturday night Speedway at Santa Ana move to Tuesday night this week . but they also have received an 14 Am erican Motorcyclist Associa tion sanction. However the new sa ncti on did not give a good luck start to "W ild Bill" Cody - the wild man suffered his first de feat in a Scratch Main a t Santa Ana Stadium. Wayne Lewis was unstoppable. defeating Cody in the Scratch Mai n and Brian Bu ffington and " Porky" McCa be in th e Handica p Main . Lewis is Santa Ana's first double main winner in First Division . In the First Division Scratch Main , Lewis led from the very beginning while Cody , Der ek Gage and Ron Rose battled for second, with Cody going down . Gage took second and Rose a close th ird. The First Division Handicap Main was not a pushover for Lewis as Bu ffington and McCabe battled him for the top spot, but when it was over, it was Lewis who won with Buffington second and McCabe third . The Second Division Scratch Main was also an upset as Brian Bishop defeated the hot bik e of Keith Crisco, who finished second in front of Mike Cross . Crisco , probably the hottest Second Division rider at present. won the Handicap Main with a strong ride to defeat Robert Borg and Dave Brewer. Third Division had a n extra treat as young j eff Ha vacko tied john Pa vano for first , Havacko , 16, had ju st received his license to race ea rlier that sa me evening , and rode a good rac e to tie in the main event. Bobbie Hunter , Santa Ana's first wom a n rider, collided with Pa t Scratch Main event , he went out of town early in th e week to ride in northern California and was not on hand to set the new record. Da ve Sims now is th e only rider besides Mike to ha ve his name in the Ascot record book under the column marked "Scr atc h Main Event Wins. " Dave did ride a grea t race with a lot of pressure from Bob Sch wartz, but the star of the night was Mike Faria, the number one rider in northern Cal ifornia. Fa ria led every rac e a t least once all night . and where it really counted, he won . This was the first time he ever rode at Ascot and all he did was win the Handicap Main Even t and come in th ird in the Scratch. Som e new ligh ting was added to the quarter-mile track and it helped a lot. The new lights lit up one of the biggest wheelsrands you'd ever want to see. Shawn Moran caught traction coming onto the front straightaway and up went the front end. He was leading the race at the time and would have missed a transfer spot if he had backed off to get the front end down, so he rode it past the start-finish line and got it down just in time to pitch it into turn one. This was the first time Shawn has ridden in Division One at Ascot and all he d id besides bring the fans to their feet was earn a ride i n both Mains. taking fourth in th e Scratch and third in th e Handicap , There was no event at Costa Mesa because of the co unty fai r. Ne xt race this Friday nig ht, j ul y 28 . r: Kelly M oran . A utrey favored in World Finals Californian Scott Autrey has won his way to the September 2 Final at Speedway World England's famous Wembley Stadium with a great chance of winning th e title for America. Scot t finished th ird in th e Inter-Continental Final at Fredericia , Denmark, but was unlucky not to win the meeting, He beat both Ole Olsen and Ivan Mauger, the reigning World Champion. but was excluded from one heat when his bike failed to start. He was disqualified under the .rwo-minute rule. It was bad luck for Autrey who has proved to be one of the most consistent and successful rid ers in England this ·year. Since taking over as captain of the Exeter team . following the transfer of Mauger to Hull - one of myoid teams - Scott has come into his own and won many major ind ividual meetings. Now he goes into the Wembley final knowing that he is just five races . away from every speedway rider's dream - winning the world title. He ha proved that he can beat riders like Ole, Ivan and England's Pet er Collins when it matters , and I'd ra te his chances of d oing well at Wembley as very high , T he pr essur e on a ride r on Worl d Fina l night is fant astic.
