Harrison WITCHITA FALLS , TX ,JULY 4 At a rare AM A-sanctioned race on the 3/8-mile Witchita Falls oval , several spectators had the atmosphere in hand with ' " W here the hell is Witchita Falls?" T -shirts. It was the first American Motorcyclist Association Class Crace in town in 17 years, and the hungry Texans a nd Ok ies were rea dy. AMA's first fem ale referee Janie Stanfield called t he riders together and said "There's only 46 riders , so everybody ma kes points tonight. " It was heaven to m any a privateer wa nting to mo ve up. And so it bega n on an "outlaw" track that wou ld make many northern and midwestern tracks look sick . The facilities were beautiful, although typical for the Sou th . The first semi was won by Lubbock's Bubba Shobert after a big battle with Freddie Spencer, Teddy Head and Donny Tolbert. Sem i two saw Garlands' Terry Poov ey finally get it all sorted out from th ird to finish first ahead of David Jones . The third semi saw Bultaco of Ft. Worth's Mike Green lead from pole to pol e ch a llenged only by Bates Accessories of Dallassponsored Scotty Reynolds and Abilene's Andy West. Fourth semi was a Rusty Patillo workout with National number 33 West Powell on his tail way out ahead of the field . After all this , Terry Poovey was the sensation of the pits. He had blown four liikes in practice. Brother Teddy was trying to get the act together . borrowing motorcycles, changing jets and gearing. Leave it to Teddy; he was apprehensively smiling at the start of the final with Terry firmly attached to Ok lah oma's David J ones', Dennis La ttim er -tu ned Yama ha . As the final lined up , it was anybody's guess with front row including Terry Poovey , Freddie Spencer, the Ifi-year-old sensation in his first short track of the summer, and Bu bba Shobert . fresh young Novice from Lubbock with spectacular long broadslide habits on a blue groove. Texas National Starter Phil Dyson threw the flag and Irving's Rusty Patillo was off first followed by Shobert, Spencer, Poove y and Mike Green . Shobert took th e lead on the second lap and set sail with a comfortable lead. As Poovey and Spencer passed Patillo. Freddie Spencer shot by Shobert for the lead. Poovey followed when Sh ob ert slid out of the groove. Then Spencer set sail with Poovey and Shobert battling it out for second Poovey passed Shobert and then started working on Spencer. The last four laps came up as Poovey .' in a desperate mov e . elbowed Spencer a nd put th e crowd on th eir _ feet. th en took the lead with Spencer hot on his tail at the fini sh . Poove y. with brother T edd y and nephew 2·year-old T eddy. Bad Chad blasts Kanopolis By Dick Ainsworth LAKE KANO POLIS, KA,JULY 4 KMSA season points racing is getting to ugh . and some riders . are beginning to reach into the bottom of their bag for answers, C. D, Martin passed defending number one a nd AMA National Amateur Cha mpion Tim Lindfors for the O pen class lea d , bu t just barely. Lindfors debu ted a n XR· 750 in hopes of getting some m ore mo tor advantage over his old KR and not letting Martin and his trusty Yamaha 650 get away with his title. Tim looked hot in practice, but C .D . was pumped and took the win . over Tim in both the heat and the finals. Mark Kumle took third in both. The 200cc final was a down -to -thewire affair in the 100·plus heat , but not in the usual hard pass ing repassing tactics that is ' so common at Kanopolis. Instead, it was a series of blown engines. After KMSA number one " Bad Chad" Olinger won his heat over Scott Novotny, Mont G . and Mom O . Me Allister, Olinger shot to the lead in the final and began to open up a big lead. ' Novotny kept him in sight , but at a distance after passing Mont G . for second , gett ing passed back , but finall y gett ing it on th e back chute. Mont G , sta yed close while his dad , Mom 0. , moved pa st Brian Sanders . The white flag came out and a spl it second later Olinger pulled in the clutch and threw up a warning arm to the riders behind him that he had blown. He coasted free-wheeling down th e front chute as Novotny shot by to take the lea d . Coasting into the steep south uphill , Oli nger let the cl utch out and his Yamaha restarted, blubbered quite a bit , but he was off trying to hold on to second place as he was running quite slowly. But on the back chute Novotny's arm flew up in the air as his bike just quit and Olinger now found himself back in the lead and barely winning over a fast -closing McAllister. Kirk England took the lead in the Mini final over Todd Ratliff and Todd Hilyard and 'these three ran awa y from the field and fought for the lea d all the way with England winning it on his Yamaha. Hilyard took the lead over Ratliff and Dallas Bobcock in the 100cc heat , but Ratliff horsepowered by on the front chute, On lap three Hilyard missed a gear and Ba bcoc k took over second. In the final Ratliff led Ba bcock a nd Hilyard all the way . Dallas Ba bcock too k the lea d in the 125cc final, but Phil Culver shot by a nd was gone like a roc ket. England held third over Mike Erickson a nd Ol inger, and that was the way they circled until the last lap when Culver , with a very big lead , killed his motor and a surprised Babcock fou nd himself the winner. Culver got restarted and finished last. In the 250cc final, Phil Culver took the lead over Gary Garrison, Bill Snyder. Mel Watso':! and Keith Harris, who got by both Magnuson and Doug Crawford in one swoop. ' Bu t Magnuson got Harris back and began to close on Watson . On la p six Magnuson passed Watson as Snyder overtook Garrison for second. Harris moved up on Watson and at the flag he passed him for fifth . Dennis Byrne was gone like a jet in the 500cc heat and did th e same thing in the final as he led Dan "W et Head" Brooks, Sn yder, Gary. Schlickau, Harris and Gene Hackerott. On lap four Harris pulled off with bike trouble and two lap s later Byrne had a 20 -yard lead over a three-way battle for second . Schlickau tried Snyder on the inside in the last turn but Snyder held him off for third , • Results MINI CYCL E: 1. Kirk England (Yaml: 2. Todd Ratliff . (Yam); 3. Todd Hilyard IYaml. 100cc: 1.
