M ike Montgomery scored Open Expert wins on the Perris short track and rr, Dave Williams dominated the 250cc Pros at Saddleback Saturday M otocross. SSM hosts GNC Superbowl qualifier By T erry Whytal ORANGE. CA .JUNE 17 This week's Saturday Saddleback Motocross was also a qualifier for the 'GNC Amateur race held in the Coliseum June 26, two days after the Pro Superbowl. The thought of riding on a Supercross track brought a record number of riders out on a Saturday and provided spectators with excellent race viewing. Maico rider Da ve Williams at tempted to ride in both the 250cc and 500cc classes . but after running awa y with the 250cc race he was unable to finish the 500 . And run away with th e race he did. completel y dom inating both motos by a wide margin . Trying hard to keep up with the wild -riding W illiams were Arden Hadley (Ma i), who fin ished second in both motos, and Bill Rubly (Mai) who was third. The 500cc Pro class belonged to Yamaha rider Scott Gilman who easily rode to the overall win with two first place finishes. Rounding ou t the top three spots were Maico-rnounted Val Tamietti ahead of Robert Marino on a Yamaha . Team Kawasaki's Gaylon Mosier brought a new 125cc out to show off with and in doing so he took charge of the 125cc Pro class . Mosier won both motos ahead of Suzuki rider Tony Gomez who put in two good rides challenging Mosier. T hird pos ition was filled by Pat Hubbs on a Suzuki. Resu lt s 500 PRO: 1. Seon Gilman (Yam); 2. CA ,JUNE24 Team Yamaha's Pierre Karsmaker won the 250cc Pro race at this week 's Saturday Saddleback Motocross. At the start of the first moto Maico rider Bill Rubly ju m ped to the lead followed by Tim Tolar (Suz) and Karsmakers . On the fourth lap Tolar fen and Karsmakers inherited second with Luc DeLey (Suz) moving up to third. Halfway through the race Karsmakers dropped off the pace and Rubly opened up a big lead by the checkers. Karsmakers held on to secon d and DeLey finished third . Rubly again grabbed the lead at the start of the second moto with the next three positions going to Flores, De Le y and Karsmakers . Ka rsm akers soon passed DeLey, then Flores and by th e thi rd lap he took the lead from Rubly. Tim Sparks charged his Honda u p through the p ack to take third away from DeLey. The overall finishing order was _Karsmakers , Ru bly and DeLey. . Arden Hadley, riding a Mai co , won th e first 500cc Pro race with second going to Yamaha rid er Brett Catcott a nd third to Steve Fry also on a Yamaha . The second moto went to Catcott as Hadley DNF and Fry rode in for second ahead of Tim Berry (Yam). The overall finishing order was Catcott, Fry and Berry. Suzuki rider Tony Gomez totally devastated the 125cc Pro class b y winning both motos by a wide margin. As Tony was riding off with the first race. second and th ird pos itions were being heavily contested. Steve Manfrien , Zach Halapoff and Shaun Perrera , all riding Suzukis, each made his bid for second with the nod going to Perrera and third belonging to Halapoff. Gomez again led all the way in the second rnoto with second place going to Vere Butler (Ya m) and third to Halapoff. O verall finishing order was Gomez. Halapoff a nd Perrera , Results 500c c PRO: 1. JUNE 24 Curtis Cannon , Kei th Guthrey, Don Milan, Tim Gray. and Mike Montgomery each recorded short track victories in t heir respective classes at Perris Raceway . Later. that sweet first place. melody would play one more time in the TT for the same five . Curtis (younger brother of 250cc Expert Chris Cannon) won the 80cc Expert sho rt track and TT runnings with ease. Keith Guthrey did just about th e same as Curtis. taking the 125cc Novice honors . In the 125cc Amateur/Expert , it was Don Milan double barreling his shotgun Suzuki through the pack and also striking home for two trophies. For Tim Gray. the winning wasn't so easy. Tim was vel'}' closel y pursued by Ed RegalIa all night long as both rode Suzukis in the 250cc No vice TT motos. T im finall y prevailed with RegalIa a close second. On the short track , Mike Montgomery had two second-place finishes going into the final rnoto of the Open Experts. Consequently. with Vince Graves and John Sperry splitting the first s between them , Montgomery won the overall by winning the fina l moto . Mike also took the TT with a couple of wins and:a second in the last race of the night. For the second week in a row. Don Keel ing had to set tle for seco nd best , this ti me behind Montgomery . In the single victory category, Jeff Johnson went home after sweeping the 250cc Amateur/Expert class T T on a motocross bike. John Sperry, in his first time out to Perris in a long while , ran away with the 250cc Amateur/Expert short track like he 'd never left. Greg Beresford , borrowing Don Keel ing's Yamaha . won the Open Novice TT in the largest field of the evening.
