Hot and heavy action at AME's Indian Dunes night minicross. Turner tops AME • • m,n,cross By Judy Greenberg Photos by Bob Greenberg VALENCIA, CA , JUNE 30 Larry Turner swept Division I of the Modified Junior class during American Minicycle's Friday night minicross at Indian Dunes. Fast Eddie H icks put his Suzuki into gear to move by jason Wagner, and challenge his Palmdale buddy Turner , but Wagner turned the tables and moved back in second. As they rounded the mini sweep , Hicks tried another pass and slid ou t. The tension mounted as Wagner reached Turner's back wheel in ' th e ess. The battle ensued right down to the wire with Turner the victor. Turner's holeshot in moto two was again challenged by Wagner and Hicks. The pressure was on as Turner felt his shadow. When he . lost his footing for a sp lit second in the tower tum , Wagner moved to his side. As they headed to the ess, Wagner made a last attempt to take ,over and went down, losing h is second overall to Hicks. Action ran high in the 12 yea rs and over 83cc Stock Beginner class from d ie time the warriors charged off the line . l:yrone Taylor grabbed the lead, only to find jerry Loaiza (H &H Auto) .nd Brad Stich on h is tai l. As the mighty trio mixed it up around the course, Loaiza took the lead , leaving Taylor and Stich bar to bar for second, and Bryan Bier and Paul Sherrodwith wheels in line for fourth. The flag came out for Loa iza , with Stich behind. It was Loaiza from the start of moto two, followed by Bier. Taylor closed in and kept the pressure on Bier with each lap. Heading into the hairpin: Bier went high on the berm and bounced off, almost taking Taylor with him, but the battle continued with Taylor taking a second. Gilbert Valdez (Verdugo Suzuki) took back to back wins for the 9·11 Stock and Modified juniors. Valdez held a commanding lead du ring the first moto, while Todd Parker battled his way through a tight pack for , second. john Gersjes looked for a way around Parker , but had to settle for third . The second time around , Parker put th e squeeze on Va ldez righ t from th e sta rt , but by th e third lap Val dez pu lled enough of an ed ge to hold the lead , providi ng he made no m istakes. Gersjes was sa nd wiched in between Lisa Sanders and Bob Clark , but broke loose on the downhill to chase Parker. The race tightened for second , but Parker.hung on.
