Steve Eklund 1111 attempts a move around Fay on the outside of turn two. Springer lets go with a victory bubbly burst. Next to him is Lynn Griffis. Joyner, Morehead , Davis and Brian Peterson. Pearson and Joyner pulled away from the pack to lead all the way, while Morehead , Davis , Mike Sullivan and Peterson stayed in tight formation . Again Davis proved to be .strongest as the finish grew closer, and passed Morehead again late in the race to finish third. National The National field rolled to the line with Steve Eklund sitting on the pole and Mickey Fay next to him as the two fastest heat winners. Fay rocketed into the lead ahead of G'!ry SCOtt, Brad Hurst, Springer and Eklund. The third lap found Eklund moving ahead of Springer while Bi11y Oliver moved up to challenge the defending National Champ. Behind Oliver came Boody , Alex Jorgensen , and Dave Aldana. A lap later Oliver set Springer back to sixth, and on the next lap , Eklund passed Hurst to occupy third . Springer's setback was only temporary and he re-passed Oliver and then Hurst as well. Eklund was going for his third straight 17 win (and fourth National in a row as well) and he {'assed Scott for second. Fay was still nding in top form and he kept his lead steady at about four to six bikelengths. Behind fifth -place Hurst , Jorgensen and Oliver started swapping places with Alex moving ahead then having Oliver got back in front of him. Aldana , Randy Skiver, Randy Goss and Don Dodge followed . Corky Keener was out of the event with a busted gearbox and Ted Boody was circulating far back after sliding out in the sweeper made up of the last two comers. Eklund moved to pressure Fay through the corners, but he wasn't having a whole lot of success. Springer had passed Scott, who had to be content to race side by Hurst. "I must have passed him six or eight times ," Hurst said later. At the 20-lap mark, Eklund was still testing Fay's defense , and Springer had moved into striking position. Hurst had settled into fourth . On lap 21, Eklund almost edged by through the first two turns, but Fay shut him off. On the next lap, through the righthander, Fay's machine suddenly' went sour. Eklund took the lead, but that was short-lived . Steve was going very high through the sweeper before the front straight while Jay had brought his line down through the same corner and started making up time. "My bike pogo-sticked on me coming out of the sweeper," said Eklund. He was passed by Springsteen , who held the lead to the finish. Springer's choice of a Goodyear DT 2 had worked out well, for as the other rider's tires had started to go away , his started to stick, allowing him to use the lower lines. Eklund stayed with Springer to finish second ahead of Hurst. Scott was fourth with Fay fifth. Mickey's impressive ride was not all for naught; he received $20 for each lap he led. The first five were well ahead of Jorgensen, Aldana, Oliver, Dodge, Goss, Boody, Hendrickson and Skiver . Springer leads Eklund going in to next weekend's two Nationals - the Ascot 17 and the Sears Point road race. Eklund will compete in both, but Springer will not ride at Sears Point. The two are about 70 points in front of third-place Skip Aksland in the Camel Pro standings. Results NATIONAL: 1. Jay S~_ (H-D); 2. SIeve EltlundIVom); 3. Brad Hurst fTnl;4. Gary Scott fTrl); 5.
